I saw a picture of this watch on a dive trip to the Bahamas last summer and liked it, but couldn't find it while I was there. I found out that they are only sold through AD in the Caribbean. My wife tracked one down and made arrangements to get me one for my birthday. What a gal!

She's a keeper! So is the watch!

I'll be honest, I didn't even see it was a Tag so yes, I'd say it looks like a Rolex...

I think that's intentional.

So, with buying watches out of the US.... I was in the islands a while back, and happened to stop in a jeweler in the port area. They sold Breitling watches, and seemed to be selling them at a significant discount over the typical US price. They sold others as well. I would tend to think knockoff, but I don't really picture someone making a fake Breitling Aviator, complete with the little box that tests the distress signal, which is what I was looking at at the time.

Anyone bought anything along the same lines, Rolex, Omega, Tag out of the country and saved a bundle? Just curious.

Yes, you can certainly do that. Rolex watches in, for example, Tehran, are about 1/2 to 2/3rds the price they sell for in the US. Why? Part of it is distribution costs, warranty costs, and just costs of doing business in different countries. But the biggest thing is pricing for the market. In many countries, a wristwatch priced at the same price as sold in the US would ensure that virtually no one in that country would wear one. So the manufacturers price them as a luxury good commensurate with how luxury goods in that market are generally priced.

Since the US is one of the richest and most affluent markets in the world, we get the highest prices.

Many luxury goods manufacturers are particularly scrupulous about how their products get distributed and sold. While it may be easy to buy "gray market" wristwatches such as Omega or Breitling at Costco in the US at a significant discount compared to authorized jewelers, it is nearly impossible to buy gray market Rolex watches domestically. Rolex defends their brand with an aggressiveness like no other.

If the shop you saw the wristwatches in was a reputable jeweler, it's extremely likely they're genuine. The knock-offs (counterfeits - and they're illegal to purchase and to own in most countries, including the US) are pretty easy to spot.

When you buy those luxury goods at discounts in foreign countries, be sure to declare them when you come back to the States. I'm sure you will.

WA.

I bought a Sub in the Caribbean from an Authorised Dealer, it was a lot cheaper than if I had bought it in the UK (Duty Free).

Buying from an AD means no worries about knock offs.

Not the artistic photos, just some quick snaps of watches I bought while (temporarily) gainfully employed late last year. Oh, new camera too (Christmas present from sister), which I'm not accustomed to yet.

Seiko SNK807:

Seiko SNKK13K1:

Jacques Lemans Capri Chronograph:

Invicta Vintage ($45, couldn't resist trying a huge watch for that price):

44mm, and my wrist is only 52mm across. That's HUGE, laddie!
