My (ex) BIL is a gen-yoo-ine Swiss-trained horologist. He can build a whole escapement by hand but he earns his bread and butter doing routine repair and service on high-end watches. He tells me about some of his 'regulars' who insist on wearing their Rolexes (Rolexii?) while roofing or doing other rigorous manual labor on a regular basis and then bitching about having to have them serviced so frequently. Duuuuh.

I appreciate the craftsmanship. Yes, they can be fine works of art. But I've just had one too many drunken assholes seated next to me in coach class who insist on digging their breitling or patek into my thigh as they fumble their way into their seatbelt. I just don't get excited about a man wearing a big expensive watch.

I wear a mechanical watch because I love the nature of precise mechanical things- if a woman happens to notice and appreciate a watch, all the better.... same goes for a woman who can appreciate a GS vs your standard knee jerk societally conditioned harley fan.

I have a hard time with watches. I tend to wear cheap ones, but mostly because I hate watches that are the size of a pie plate. They get bound up in my shirt cuffs and stuff.

I'd love to have a Gruen Curvex. Very subtle and elegant, IMHO.
