KTM 525 EXC as an Adventure Bike

does anyone carry any specialty stuff on long trips? like coils, pulsar, etc?

i have a couple "longer" trips coming this year, and while i don't want to carry a bunch of unnecessary shit, i'd like to avoid any easy to remedy "trip enders"

any specific failure points i should be aware of? what things have stranded you in the bush?

Haven't heard of a coil failing, if there is a problem with spark you can usually fix it by cutting a piece of the plug wire and refitting the boot.

I would however change out the stock stator for a Trailtech, they are much more reliable.

Stock clutch slave cylinders are also not the most reliable, the newer updated version is a bit better but the Sigutech replacement will likely make it a non-issue for the rest of the bikes life.

seems i've read a couple things at ktmtalk recently about cracked coil caps? but i'm not sure how often that happens.

i have a TT stator, my friend does not.

interesting about the sigutech slave, i've not heard of replacement slaves for the 450 before this (haven't looked real hard!)
you aware of anyone in the states importing those?

Hi guys, another question. Where can I install an overflow bottle for the radiator? Any suggestions? Pics can also help. I bought this 07 525XC that apparently competed in the last Dakar before it moved to South America. Last owner wasn't big on maintenance so I'm firstly completing that part. Top end was done at least. But its noisy! Its got a RS Concepts fairing so it looks cool too!!

I recently picked up a 525 exc and found cold starts to be a problem. Easily fixed by replacing the 5 series battery (4-amp hour, 80 crank amps) with a 7 seires battery (6-amp hour, 130 crank amps). I went the Yuasa YTZ7S.

Not one issue starting the big thumper anymore!

KTM Twins does, but it is more expensive than ordering direct and probably not even faster. DHL from Germany ships quick.

The Acerbis tank comes with that petcock. I bought another for the left side (as it's so much smaller than the KTM RFS petcock and I didn't need reserve). I think it'll be a challenge to find anything smaller. You might want to go back to a stock header plus one of the Flatland header guards

I've just ordered a bunch of parts to take back to Cambodia with me in April for another ride. Nothing specific like that though. I'll carry wheel bearings and seals and spare brake pads and a spark plug. The other stuff I'm taking is just normal replacement parts... I'll throw new brake rotors and pads on, a new chain and sprockets... aa new piston into the clutch master cylinder, a new slave cylinder and service the engine... then away I go.

Anything beyond that is a balance between weight and utility... and weight wins the argument every time. Oh... almost forgot, there's a set of levers zip tied inside the airbox.
