Wicked Drive Shaft Recommendations

Hello All,
I was hoping to get some advise/suggestions on which direction I should go as far as replacing my R100GS/PD drive shaft. The bike has approx. 88K on the clock, as far as I can tell its not the original (un-updated) drive shaft, changed at least once.
It went out on Saturday while going down the freeway heading to a planned Dual Sport adventure south of Blythe, CA.
Haven't torn into it yet, but when I peeled back the rear rubber boot on the shaft housing, pieces of needle bearings and housing fell out and it "clunks" when wheel is turned.
My question is, should I replace the drive shaft with a stock BMW one or look to the serviceable aftermarket ones with Grease Zerks. I run the bike hard in the desert with full knobbies, trying to keep up with my buddy on his R80G/S, so the more robust the replacement shaft is, the better.
If the aftermarket shafts are the way to go, please provide product name/purchase info.
Also, is there any other service recommendations I should perform to the final drive while I have everything apart.

for the airhead GS, you need to visit the OLD SCHOOL forum, but from my understanding and my experience with my fellow riders with a 100GS, the drive shaft is best replaced every 50,000 km. It happened to a riding buddy on the Blue Ridge Parkway one year.. he had done 55,000 km on the old shaft.

Yes 30 to 35 K miles and it's time. Don't let it go too many more miles, cause it will destroy the output shaft bearing "on the tranny," too.(out of balance causes vibration). If you start seeing or smelling oil,from the aft part of the tranny, the output bearing is "shot." I know.

Drive Shaft ReBuild

Thanks to all for getting back to me, I'm liking the looks of the Henderson rebuild route.
Hey R-dubb and HomerJ, which re-build choice did you go with; Stock, Intermediate or Off-Road? Also, how many miles do you have on your rebuild and was the turnaround time 3 weeks or less once you send them the core?

I got the offroad because I get mine dirty every weekend and like to (over)load it up and go for a 4+ day trip in the mountains each year.
Turnaround was a little longer due to some extenuating circumstances (the urethane cureing oven died). I wasn't upset cause my tranny was out being rebuilt at the same time.

I went with intermediate. My opinion is that if you do any amount of travel on pavement, you do not want offroad. The stress will be hard on the driveline. Splines and U-joints take more abuse as the shaft becomes more rigid. I kind of think stock is the better choice for most riders unless Guy feels that there is some risk that the plastic material will fail under heavy loads. Dampening is not a problem offroad. Stress to the driveline is.

Turnaround was quicker than promised in my case. I have few miles an the rebuild but expect it to last a very long time. His work is very serious with respect to quality. You won't regret spending the dough for such a nice job.
