Considering the oem build quality of these Stingers when new and Suzuki's very impressive reliability of their solely two stroke lineup way back then, these examples you've collected bear strong testament, to the abusive riding and maintenance schedules, of the youthful paperboys who flogged these virtual jewels of bikes, to their very premature sad endings...

And to think, they also probably dated someone's daughters...
The mind boggles.

I'm afraid the red one is going to help my green one along. Since my '71 was missing the chrome tail pipe tips, I actually bought the bike just for them and they're in pretty decent shape. Probably good enough to throw on for a DD and a little rechroming would make them really stand out. Should I ceramic coat the exhaust in a satin black or have them powder coated in satin? Benefits to either?

Hey V-twin,
I just got forwarded this thread from a friend. I guess I don't spend enough time here but I'm a Stinger guy here in Norcal too. I don't have a lot in spares but maybe we can help eachother out.
I'll PM you with my contact info.

Rick

Ceramic's your friend, when it comes to exhaust systems, by a country mile.

I was thinking the same. The red one actually has better pipes than the green one. Here's a good article on them and he had his ceramic coated.

Speedo

Hi guys, Having done 96,000k I guess my old girl has the right to start spittin parts but instrument guy reckons $250 to replace the speedo [not genuine or repair but nearest fit new] Only trouble is I have tacho cable in the mail and, having taken it all apart, accidently busted tacho arm. I have araldited it back but who knows for how long.

I guess my Question is, has anybody else replaced whole dash and what would be closest fit? Maybe GS used the same or such? I hate cutting and rejoining wires as it just creates another potential for corosion or looseness. The other question would be the $50 seperate speedos. Are they compatible with drive cable? They would certainly detract from original. I would like to keep the old girl close to original.

It's easy to get sick of attaching and removing the GPS just so I can keep the constabulary off my back!

Ebay is your best friend. I lost both the tach and the speedo. I think I paid about $85 for the set. Good luck.

Finally, got the cylinders back from the machine shop.

Glad I sent my ebay pistons to the shop to have match bored. I thought they were 0.25 over, but they were actually 0.5 over. That just about completely cleaned up the walls.

Got a new lead on a powder coater from an inmate, we'll see how it pans out. Waiting for my decal kit from Reproductions Decals so I can send the tank off to the painters. Thinking it would have been more cost effective to just buy a better example, but where's the challenge in that?

Started on getting the engine back together and decided to use the "new" engine cases since they were already clean. A little "bright" in color, but that's OK.

Newer, "clean" engine.

Slowly reassembling it as it's been awhile since I've pulled it apart, good thing I have another one to go by and the service manual.

Old engine.

A little at a time. Should have ordered the seals earlier, but realized both the old engine and the "new" engine is missing the crank bearing "stopper plate". Can't find it anywhere, so I ordered it. I could get it out of the third engine if I ever get it apart. The engine that's still in the red bike.

Progress is slow, but got the tank back today.

Before:

After:

Not show quality, but makes a decent rider now.

Yes, the originals are in good shape although a little stiff. I'll reinstall them after I get them warmed up and soft. Did some painting today and the battery box on the Stinger came out ok. Should have used a little bondo on the pits from rust removal though.

I decided I'd give a try painting the frame myself. I sanded it and wiped it down and primed it.

A few shots of Rustoleum semi-gloss.

It actually didn't turn out too bad.

On to the engine. I've had this thing apart alot and thought I finally had it set, when I decided to clean the original top case since the serial number matched my registration. Took a while to clean up and paint, but turned out to match the lower case.

I had it all together and then realized I has messed up on installing the kickstarter, so it had to come apart again. Got it all put back together and realized this.

The rod on the right in the picture, (actually from the seat, it would be the left one) is bent slightly. Ugh. Time to stop for the day.
