205?

If I were going to venture into the safety razor world for the first time what tips do y'all have so I don't exsanguinate?

Is there a post, or two here on this already?

I'm sure there are posts here and elsewhere, but...

Use a good soap
Don't use any pressure (at least to start)
go slowly

Also let the blade do the work, you do not need to apply pressure. Unless you dislike the shape of your face and want to reshape it.

You know, I gotta say there really is no secret to it... you will nick yourself a couple time, but trust me, you wont notice until the end. Just go slow, its really not difficult.

If I can do it with a straight and not die, your golden out of the gate with a safety

What he said. Good soap, I use wool fat soap with a good brush, cheap ones shed. As for razors, a good adgustable Mercur us a great start and you can buy sampler packs of blades. Thanks to that, I found a cheap Dorco blade that works for me.

My favourite blade so far is the Merkur Platinums that actually came with the razor. Unfortunately, no one offers them in bulk.

My favourite bulk-type blade is the Israeli "Red Pack" Personna Platinum blades. You can get 100 for less than US$20.00, shipped.

The Wilkinson Sword Blacks you can find in a 10 pack for about US$1.75 at WalMart is a darn good blade at a great price.

Merkur blades are super sharp and pricey. I might give the Personna Platinum's a shot, the Wilkinson Swords (not Blacks) that I tried sample pack, not so much.

At the chance this sounds like I'm going to post it anyway....

I shave everyday. I don't use cream, just soap and typically the cheapest razors we can find at where ever.
One day someone gave us some Gillette Pro-Glide Fusion heads.
I thought WTF no handle so they got tossed on the med cabinet and I didn't give it much thought. Well I ran out of the generic razors one day when the Mrs forgot them that week. So I grabbed the fusion heads and pulled one out and just held it by the stub that the handle fits into. No big deal right.
Well I used that head of a razor for a month and it was still sharp enough to use.
So I told the Mrs to pick up a handle and a new one.
It is the longest last edge I have ever used and it shaves smooth and clean.

Gillette Pro-Fusion. Not hype for me, but it just works well and I've been using the same blade for a month now again.

(mine doesn't use a battery WTF is that about )

straight razors cut

I've never tried it myself, but I do enjoy having someone else give me a straight razor cut. I use to get one
on Fridays when I lived in Naples, It.

I've been using a Merkur razor and alternating twixt the Feather blades and the Personna (available right down the street at Walgreens). I prefer the Personna as I get "12 o clock shadow" by 0900...the Feather blades give a close shave but the Personna blades last longer (9 days of shaving vs. 6 days).

I rotate shaving soap between Tabac, Prorasa and some type of flavored soaps.

My favorite is Tabac. Great lather, feels good on the skin and smells like a Man should.

YMMV.

been using dominica bay rum

http://www.westcoastshaving.com/Domi...ion_p_215.html

and occasionally a mug, soap, and brush for years. this thread prompted me to try a double edged safety razor. got the merkur 23C and a sample pack of blades a few weeks ago.

ordered from west coast shaving and had the stuff in a few (2?!) days.

i'm really enjoying the shave. the safety razor forces me to concentrate a little more, but it's worth it. closer shave. more fun. cheaper in the long run, i guess.

thanks for all the great info in this thread!

btw i have a gillette fusion power (+2 blades), gillette mach 3, and a shick quattro if anyone is interested. buy me an ADV sticker or two and i'll ship it out.
