I recently inherited a straight razor. I may just give it a try. I don't imagine it's the best tool for a bearded guy who only shaves his neck and cheekbones, though.

My grandfather ran a chain of barbershops and barber college in the LA area in the 1940's; the "comb and scissors" 5 cents a cut, or 10 cents for a shave and cut. When he passed last year we sold lots of his cool barbershop stuff.... lights, chairs etc.. I kept a few german made straight razors and his leather strop... One of these days I'll try one out and see if I survive. He used to make his students shave a balloon before they could work on a customer.

Started using a cutthroat in 1980 when I got sick of the girls using up my razors on their legs. Own about 40 of them now.

Best and quickest shave you'll get. Not to mention cheap and the future generations that can use your gear.

Get a strop, it needs to be sharp. Keep the heel of the blade against the strop and pull it along. If your slightly off, you will blunt it and need to restrop.

If the razor pulls on your beard it's too blunt. Make sure you have the angle right when you shave or you will slice yourself.

Dear Gillette

You suck.

I hate you.

I don't need a razor with 4, 5, or 15 blades. Two is plenty. Three is overkill.

I don't need a lube strip or anything that runs on batteries.

I don't need "turbo" anyfuckingthing that comes close to my face.

I need some that will fit the handle I've already got. You change your shit so frequently, I can't keep up with it. I've got 19 brand new blades for two handles that I don't even own anymore. You probably don't even fuckin' make them anymore.

And the one I have, the one I use now, and no spare blades. Speaking of which, having to pay 12 dollars (or more) for a 5-pack of blades is criminal.

The shit is made on automated machines in Brazil, because you can't make them any cheaper for more profit.

So you keep changing the handle / blade interface so I'm stuck with buying into a whole "new-n-improved" model every couple of years.

You rat dick bastards.

I have a single blade safety razor.

Shaves as well as you can.

I had the same 1 dollar razor blade for over 10 shaves, and it keeps me from looking like Osama.

Just like the one my dad taught me to shave with, no doubt.

The cartridges do seem over-priced, but they last a long time if you have a beard and only shave part of your face.

Here's a cool trick how to make your blades last forever, after use, have one of those canned airs used on keyboards handy, then simply give the blades a few blasts up close to remove the water on the edge, if you want to get carried away you can even put baby oil on the blades but there is no need

Blades get "dull" because of the light oxidation that forms on the edge
stainless means stainless not stain proof so drying them makes them last

Mach 3 here. I just checked and I've got 6 or 7 cartridges. That should last me a while. I do like the idea of an old-fashioned safety razor if they work as well as some people here say they do.

i had the same gillette handle for over 20 years. two-blade cartridges.

it finally gave out.

bought a new handle. three-blade cartridges.

it does shave better, and last longer.

that said, gillette has the the worst fucking commercials on tv.

old fashioned single blade double edged razors work very very well.

buy a quality one, strip it and dry blade after use, make sure to use a good soap and really let it work into your beard to soften the bristles. that part is important!
HOT water on a towel helps to make it a better shave by causing the pores to relax.

there was a reason a shave took so long back in the day at a Barbershop... it was done properly!
