From New Hampsha

Found these 2 while I was out looking for a fun place to ride during " Bike Week "

Its all part of the Army Corp Flood Control system. Great place to ride

Funny thing was, It was " BIKE WEEK " and I rode 8 hours on 2 different days, and NEVER saw another bike out there.

More Dam pictures from my Summer 08 Ride.

Great thread. I also love dams, for their varied engineering and sometimes graceful lines. The sheer number and variety of dams on the Columbia River system in the US and Canada is simply amazing.

Chief Joseph Dam on the Columbia River in Central Washington.

Long Lake Dam on the Spokane River is obviously an older dam. Interesting Design.

This dam on the Spokane River is right in downtown Spokane at the City Park. Beautiful spot in a very pretty city.

The Lower Granite Dam on the Snake River is the only river crossing in many miles. We were stopped by security and had to produce picture ID before we were allowed to cross. No stopping and no photos of the dam or lock while crossing. Odd as there was no issue in photos after we crossed.

A couple of Libby Dam on the Kootenai River in NE Montana.

To get an idea of the scale, those dots are people walking on the dam.

The original Timber Dam at Redridge. They took the top 10 or 12 feet off it a few years ago because if it let go they were afraid the steel dam would fail, even with the big holes cut in it. If the steel dam was backed up and failed it would take out the road and people would have to take the LONG way to town.

William Jess dam in Oregon. We don't make them this big in Michgian.

I think this is the Medford dam, also in Oregon. I was on my way to a friends wedding and couldn't pass up the chance to look at another dam.

That is the Applegate Dam.

Grand Falls, New Brunswick. I stopped here on my way to a Phish festival in 2003...IT! Hydroelectric dam on the St. John River.

I'd say they were releasing some water...

A closer view

Old Mill in Independence, IA. I cheated with the moon - it was a separate photo with a long lens. Stripped it in with photoshop.

You can tour the mill, and the level of engineering in there is amazing for the mid 1800s. It's Indee's big tourist attraction. Along with one bar for every 20 residents.

Teton Dam

I first read about the 1976 Teton Dam failure in Cadillac Desert. Amazing porkbarrel story. Check out this site for more info:
http://www.geol.ucsb.edu/faculty/syl...lcome_dam.html

I visited the dam site on the next-to-last day of my cross-country Elefant ride last month. I had to ride down a boat ramp to get to this section of road, which was well under water for a (very brief) time. You can see the intake tower in the upper left-hand part of the picture.
