No - don't know anything yet..but you didn't state what the problem is.

I'm looking at getting a CNC plasma table ..so please share what you learn.

Are you talking about the treated steel for aesthetic quality? To weld it?

so far, don;t buy one that you have to setup unless your really familiar with the cnc stuff to start

I will add, CandCNC support is darn good, they are helping us best they can and we did not buy this setup from them, we bought it used, partially finished,
Candcnc.com if you are planning oppn building your own system, I would start there and join tht forum to learn as much as possible before you buy, unless of course your buying a $100k machine

Yea, I doubt I will want to set one up myself, but who knows.

I'm looking forward to FabTech 2012 in Las Vegas to determine what I need.

100K is above my budget.

Check out www.cnczone.com You can get lost in there.

Here are some of the main forums:
Machine Controllers Software and Solutions
Electronics
OpenSource CNC Design Center

CNC Plasma and Waterjet Machines
Discuss building, operating CNC Plasma, waterjet and EDM machines here.
http://www.cnczone.com/forums/cnc_pl...rjet_machines/

This one subforum mainly deals with router tables. But it's all Open Source and much of the hardware for a CNC router table would also work on a CNC plasma table.

I just made a large logo sign for a outdoor products mfg company local to me for their corporate hq out of that material. Ariens.

Large as in aprox 10 foot diameter.

My employer had no trouble getting it and it welded and formed up just fine. iirc it was either 10 or 12ga sheet starting out.

I remember that you couldn't get a lot of shapes without ordering them- sheet and plate and tube were stocked in Seattle (seaport steel), the rest of the stuff came from back east, and took a little while. I used to build trail bridges, and we mostly used self weathering steel (ASTM A-588), I'm pretty sure it's the same as what you're referring to, but we never called it Corten- just weathering steel, self-weathering steel, or A-588. Try those names if you don't get a response with Corten. I believe it's high in nickel to check the rusting process. We used separate welding wire and rod, of course.

A-588 is quite a bit stronger than A-36, too- could be that Corten or the like is something that's weathering, but no stronger than A-36 (and thus cheaper and easier to procure).

I've never heard of 'weathering steel'. It has some nice properties, 119 year lifetime! Apparently Corten is the same material as A-588. In sheet form A-588 is known as A-606. And A-606 is aka Corten.

I wonder what the spec number is for the same material in tube or pipe shapes?

Edit: Ah. It's A-846 as tube or pipe.

Weathering steel is called Corten as a trade name. You should use ER80S-D2 mig wire or E8018 stick electrode on it. It is a good bridge steel and once it forms its protective oxide is takes a long time to rust away.

The mig wire that Lincoln recommends is Superarc LA-90 wire or Excalibur 8018-C1.

Check out this Torchmate cutting table. It will be at the Vegas show at Lincoln Electrics booth. Under $5000!

Thanks for the stick recommendation.

Yes I am considering one of the larger TorchMates, one reason is Lincoln owns them, factory support should be good and Lincoln Electric will still be around in 10 years.

No decision yet however.
