de-coking

I've got my /7 torn down pretty good righ now, and am planning on replacing the pushrod seals, as well as decoking the heads. I've found tons of articles on snowbum's website, but nothing on how to de-coke. can somebody point me in the right direction? is it just as simple as spraying with simple green, and lightly scrubbing? thanks

De- coking went out with beaded edge tires and kerosine lamps-------.

I didn't know that. I've never taken my heads off to decoke, though I have a buddy that does do it every couple of years. But when it's off and there is a lots of build up I do take a few minutes to remove it and it is as simple as some simple green and a scotchbrite pad. JT

I did it a couple weeks ago. Just like JT says. Simple green and a pad.

If you have the time, dilute a bit of the stuff and soak them in it for awhile.

one more thing, you'll find goop built up on the outer portion of the cylinder walls as well.

I know some people are freaky about scrubbing or cleaning the nikasil, but mine came off with very little effort after i let it soak for a bit and from the way my bike runs now, I don't believe it hurt it any.

See "the garage" forum for nikasil honing thread and warnings against scotchbrite pads. etc. ad nauseum.

De-Coking

Honcho,
I happed to know of a great carbon and coke remover. Permatex spray gasket remover. I happened on this "discovery" by mistake.
I was working on a guys Honda CRX and while the head was removed, I sprayed a generous amount of the gasket remover to the head surface. Some overspray landed on the piston top which I left on for a few minutes while being distracted. When I wiped off the excess overspray from the piston top, all I saw was a bright aluminum surface.
Now this wasn't just carbon, but a buildup which would normally require a careful scraping. I continued to do the other piston tops with equal success. Try it, it really works!
