Wicked No Sand Here!...Just Rocks, Trees and Water

or Why You Shouldn't Take Stupid Chances When Riding Alone

The day started out nice enough, with beautiful sunny skies. Here's a view of Table Rock from a distance.

Well the choice to turn around was easy here.

Then off to some of the less maintained forest roads.

Over the top of the mtn it becomes graded down the other side, but it doesn't appear to be too big of a priority, does it?

We actually had some real high winds up here last Monday. Well I decide to have a closer look and what do ya know, it looks like somebody made it around on a bike!

Lets see here.. ...all I have to do is slide down under this tree and then pop out on the other side.

I'd be going in the opposite direction as the trail blazer....but it looks like the easier way to me.

Well I'm comitted to it now!

I stalled the motor

Well here goes it with no run....afterall it's not too high just a bit steep.
But the HEAVY old DR is wearing a set of 270s that have OVER 3,000 miles on them, including a trip to the Scrub and Kamp Kraut last month. The terrain turns out to be rock covered in mossy loam and that worn Kenda just spins.

Well I can't push it up the hill so I turn around and try a couple of more times. But it's slick and uneven all along the approach and I just can't seem to get a run at it. A new line gets me close with the front tire at the road and the rear spinning.....I decide to lay it down and see if I can drag it up on it's side.....now I need to lay down and rest.

Well after eating and drinking and letting my heart rate descend from space I repeat the process till victory is at last mine! Thank God!
A little bit dirtier bu no worse for the wear.

This is where I entered the Parkway

Then it's off to Blowing Rock for a well deserved/ earned sammich!

I aint done yet.....that's just the AM adventure!

After lunch I went to explore an area that looks like it has some great riding from looking at both topo maps and google! Too bad it all turns out to be private with locked gates everywhere. Oh Well I know a good one, but do I want to try it alone........

Of Couse I do !!! It's just got a few water crossings that should be pretty tame if the water is low.....it's been 2 days since it rained...no problem!

The road starts out pretty mellow but becomes less maintained the farther you go.
More water!

This one is a favorite coming from the opposite way....I'm going down the mtn today though.

Looking back....that was just waaaay too easy going down hill.

See they're not too deep....no problem!

Did I mention any water crossings?

and the EXIT...too bad that was fun!

A quick check of the time lets me know I should be able to make it back to Morganton to catch Gaston Gagne's group heading out at 5pm for some single track!...stay tuned!

Right on time.....I think...anyway they were still there! all 3 of them. A group of 4 is a good size for off roading though.....this is going to be fun!
Gaston and Lucky

Is it OK to call you Mrs. Gagne?

Getting off the beaten path!

It's nice to have some help with the trees!

An old old log crossing. Here's Lucky

She handles that XT350 like it's a mountain bike!

there's more but I gotta go for a min.....

Hey Kev, if yer gonna do stuff like that, you need to get a 125 so you can just toss it over obstacles. Just sayin'.......

Then we came to this little water crossing, it wasn't very wide but it was real bumpy and rocky.

Lucky coming thru....

Here she is making us guys look silly again!

Another major road block!

The Long Way 'Round

A nice view of Grandfather Mtn somewhat spoiled by the who built that condo atop Sugar Mtn.

With the shadows getting long we descended the mountain on this power line that was quite steep and rocky in places.

Getting to the rocky parts.

Still making it look a bit too easy!

Lucky's "like new" old DR suffered a mild low side up on the rocks and now it wouldn't start....so he had to coast the rest of the way down. When it finally did start it was running rough and stalled a few more times but back on the street things cleared up and it got back to normal. We think that the carb just needs to be cleaned, a bike that old, even in great shape, has probably gotten some varnish build up inside. The drop may have knocked some loose and temporarily plugged a jet or something.

All in all it was a great day!!

Great pics!!!! Ya gotta tell me how to get there! (Please!) I was watching for you guys on 105 and 181...no wonder I never saw you!

Is that place accessible for offroad (untagged) bikes?...maybe a truck/trailer parking area somewhere?

Nice.

I know that feeling of being alone and having to haul the bike up/out of something all too well...

Nice pics Banjo, that terrain looks like alot of fun to ride. But........wheres the sand? No wonder you guys hate the sand down here in Fl. If us Florida sandfleas were to ride all those rocks and hills we would look like fish out of water. Those rocks have got to hurt when you fall.
All in all beautiful country. Excellent ride report!
