Fair enough.
Well if you change your mind we can give you a bed for the night, but it is a long ride in and out.

I got to visit Argyle last year, both the open cut (winding down) and the underground (developing).

It is lovely country, and driving, spoiled to some extent by suicidal caraveneers.

Here's a shot from the top of the open cut:

and one from the bottom:

Great report and shots . . .

Easy - on the Pig at least. With that 30lt tank I filled up the day before on arrival in Broome and arrived in Sandfire 341km later having consumed only 22.16 litres. I'll be writing up this leg later today with any luck, so you'll see that the Sandfire Roadhouse lived up to its name!

Yes some of the roadhouses on the norwest certaily hit you with high fuel pices. We pay $1.52AUD for a litre here in Exmouth. One day it jumped 10 cents overnight??? I suppose thats why one fuel station ower has a $400,000 private fishing boat. No competition....

Watch out for roos from Minilya to Carnarvon if you are traveling morning or arvo.

Ride safe

Day 12, Point of departure Broome

I know I keep saying how its not a good idea to ride late in the afternoon or early in the morning out here because of the wildlife. But I was on the road by 6.30am - right on sunrise - in order to get some of that beautiful light in my photos. I just rode real slow is all, especially on the way back out of Broome to the main highway. As you can see, that section was directly into the rising sun. Exciting really, because from here you've finished the northern and the western legs and it's all south and east again.

I wish I'd had the presence of mind to shoot some video, which my camera is (only just) capable of. What you're looking at here is the strangest meteorological phenomenon I have ever seen. A wedge of cooler air from inland is easing its way underneath the warmer coastal air and travelling northwest at about 30kmh. As it lifted the warmer air, a band of grey mist/cloud was forming at the leading edge, then evaporating again seconds later, creating what looked like a thin travelling wave of grey that passed over me headed back toward broom at 30-40kmh! Bizarre, and beautiful.

Unfortunately there was a thin misty overcast when I went through here, but this area is something of a wetland at this time of year. I suspect it's just cattle grazing in the dry, but last time I came through the main highway had sheets of water over it for hundreds of meters in several places. Check out the bird life though.

Its 287km from the Roebuck Roadhouse (at the Broome turn-off) to the next fuel outlet, and this is what's left of it. This is a really evocative stop called Sandfire Roadhouse, which in the past has been surrounded by maintained gardens with trees and even roaming peacocks! Well, a lot of that stuff was still there, but as the photo shows, Sandfire lived up to its name. The week before I came through, fire swept through the roadhouse itself, leaving only the pumps and living quarters unscathed. For anyone needing to use plastic, this is a disaster, because the place can now only accept cash! Luckily I always carry enough for drinks. . .
