This may be the smallest roadkill of all time. Some kind of rare and threatened native species of finch according to my scientist daughter. Woops. For those that don't own BMWs, this is a view under the left cylinder where the oil level sight glass is. Seems the little feller was interested in the bike's service status.

That was 880km for the day, and it looked at this point as though I might have cleared the rain after 3000km! This is my room. Nice huh? I had something on the menu called "lamb shanks". They certainly did seem to be lamb shanks, but not as we know them. . . Bizarre flavours in there my friends.

Day 4, Point of departure Sarina

Hmm. Not good. Threatening rain again! By the time I was on the road, it was both pissing down rain and getting damned hot and humid. But at least the scenery was getting tropical.

Do you think I'm getting my point across about the weather yet?

I arrived in Cairns about 3.00pm, with 804km for the day. It was still raining lightly and humid as hell. I chose a cheap motel at random. This is it.

There may be those among you who believe Australia is in the grip of the most severe drought in recorded history. That's true, we are. But guys on bikes are apparently exempt. I have now covered 4000km AND IT'S STILL BLOODY RAINING! A close up of my chosen motel. Beautiful isn't she?

This is the reason for stopping in Cairns. I had already put 4000km-plus on this Tourance before departure, and on past experience with other tyres figured I'd be just about on canvas by now. But lo and behold: not dead yet. Still, I wasn't sure it would make yet another 4000km+ to Darwin, so I was off to the tyre guy in the morning.

Day 5, Point of departure Cairns

You're not going to believe this. I was at Wayne Leonards bike shop by 8.00am and eventually had a chat with two guys who looked at my rear tyre, discussed where I was going, and instead of taking my money, told me I'd probably be okay! Can you believe that? They turned down a sale in the name of good customer service. I felt like buying the tyre just to thank them! Didn't though

So I was on the road by 8.50am and had to ride up through the local hills to get across the Great Divide which separates the coastal plains from the inland. I knew this was where the rain would stop, but before that, there was this stunning bit of road. Sometimes rain is worse than others.

Down there is Cairns - the last look at the coast before a complete change of scenery.

Here's a complete change of scenery. If you look closely you can see a pair of tyre tracks that cross and recross each other before leading to black scuff marks.

They're all mine. This road is single lane, and used by road trains from a mine further inland. When a road trains is coming at you, you do get off the black and stop until it has gone past. This is not optional by the way.

Once they've gone past, you can continue, but in this case the broken edge of the tarmac and the narrow strip of slick mud caused a spot of bother. The front tyre got up no worries, but the rear spun up, turning me sideways and into a tank-slapper that ended with me upside down.

I know: you wanted to see pics of the pig still lying down didn't you? Well tough. You leave your shit in the road out here and it will be flat real fast. No road train is gonna stop or even slow down just to avoid a motorbike (although the pig is fairly large).

This is the bike an hour later. The left handlebar is truly bent into a strange shape, but a bit of water pipe got it good enough to put the hand guard back on. The left pannier is badly grazed and the lock crushed. It doesn't look too bad, but it turns out there's more damage to the panniers and frame than I thought. . .
