And this is where the other damage to the Pig first makes itself felt. Symptoms include wallowing through corners at high speed, particularly over undulations. In my cleverness, and after using all the pre-load adjustment available and experimenting endlessly with rebound settings, I have concluded that the base pre-load at the rear is insufficient. This can be remedied by extracting the shock and somehow winding down the hydraulic adjustment collar.

Having paid insufficient attention to the shock before installing it initially, it is only once I have disassembled half the bloody motorbike that I realise I will need a shock spring compressor to actually perform this task. I, obviously, do not have one. This fact will come back to haunt me. Furthermore, although extra preload would be welcome, the problem with the bike is a tad more serious than this, as it turns out.

Anyhow, having reassembled everything into pretty much working order, I am finished for the day. 1066km, and a rear end rebuild.

Day 7, Point of departure Barkly Roadhouse

The morning can not come quickly enough, but does anyway. I had a great night. I cannot remember what I ate, but I did have beer. It is now 6.45am and I'm on the road. A quick photo of a cattle road train out the front of the roadhouse before I leave.

The road back up into the gulf country is a long one, narrow and poorly maintained. It's almost 400km to the next outpost of human life at Cape Crawford, which is just a roadhouse on a corner, with a pub called the Heartbreak Hotel. This is the start of that road.

This is more of it, quite a bit further on.

This was not wise.

To be truthful, this incident scared the bejeezus out of me. I've had real big 'roos run across the road before, but this is the first one I've hit. I was lucky though, I struck it with my right boot, killing it instantly but not even bruising myself.

"Kick save...and a beauty!"

I'm sorry about the bounding marsupial, but better he than you. Nice reflexes.

Great stuff, LR. Keep it coming.

Incidentally, the man in the photograph is Marv Albert. When he's not being arrested for biting women while wearing their underwear,

he's a top sports announcer over here. The quote below the first photo is one of the signature lines fom Marv's hockey broadcasts.

The bad toupee must be an homage to Howard Cosell.

Ride on.

Did I mention this is a long road? Not much in the way of trees either.

Someone with a sense of humour must have planted this and been tending it for a coupla years. This was the only non-grass thing for at least 100km.

But it's a long road and eventually the terrain changes from pure steak-food to a bit of scrub and even some low hills.

Here's a game we can all play at home. Pretend you're riding at (or above) the legal 130kmh speed limit here in the NT. Now, which of these is an anthill and which is a 'roo, emu, goat, dingo, bloke taking a piss? And which of them will sprint out onto the road in front of you just for a larf?

But all good things come to an end, even this wonderfull road, and we soon arrive at Cape Crawford and the Heartbreak Hotel. One of the main attractions is this fuel bowser, which, despite dispensing only 91 octane, laughingly requests $1.72/litre

Lucky they don't have 95.
