With the sun setting around 3:00 PM in these northern parts. an early start has to be made for sunset photos. But diligence pays off. After a long series of shots before the sun got below the horizon, these were the aftereffects. Here, the sun's rays illuminate the atmosphere just above the horizon. Distant mountains appear to have topknots. These are an example of Fata Morgana, a mirage caused by temperature inversions, with dense cold air under a layer of much warmer air.


A better rendering of the Fata Morgana, widespread along the mountains with temperatures at lower elevations running 30 to 40 below zero F.
