Yep. They never actually built any as Chrysler never sold them the chassis as they had promised. I know because I was one of the first on the list for one...

^ That CRD conversion is pretty cool! I'd much rather have a CRD than a 4bt!

The CRD might be able to get you a 50% increase in fuel economy. I see no reason for the 4bt though, not a big fuel mileage gain and it's heavy. Seriously I've never been wanting for more torque in a Jeep before.

Yeah, the 4.0 has always done me just fine. BUT, a little 4 banger turbo diesel that would get me 27 on the hiway instead of 15? Thats a mod worth having.

The CRD had it's own problems. Mainly the prone to failure EGR valve. The Jeep Skunkworks guys knew about it and removed the EGR from the Crate engine conversion they once brought to EJS a few years back. They also tend to remove it from their other projects with the engine. You need to flash the PCM to remove it from being checked otherwise the engine won't run without it. It's also fairly large and complicated.

What interests me the most is HPA's 1.9L VW TDI conversion. http://www.hpamotorsports.com/TDI-YJ-AX5.htm & http://www.hpamotorsport.com/tdijeep.htm So far they're only offering the kit for those with the 2.5L/AX-5 combo.

"Our TDI is rated for 100hp and 180 lb-ft of torque stock in its stock form but has even more potential with a few simple performance mods. Because our conversion retains the original engine ECU, a power prom flash can easily be added to bump this to 165hp and 265 lb-ft of torque respectively."

Although if you don't have any inspection or an older Jeep, then an OM-617 might be something to look at. I'd love to be able to install a diesel that doesn't rely on ECM's just for the simplicity and ruggedness.

Here are pics of my cheap, clean 1997 XJ. got it over a year ago bone stock. Now 180K running on 32s.

Fabed up the aluminum lightbar. Have 4 HELLA LF-170 Strikers to go on there. Put the winch on, and hit the grill and headlight trim with a masonry sealer. Dried up real nice - very solid.
