Norton 750 Flat Tracker

Here's a video I shot June 16 at the IFTA races in on the 1/2 mile track ain Frankfort, Ind.

The video stars Dave Atherton and a Norton 750. As you will see in the race highlights this is an incredibly fast combination.

How different would that bike have been from the ones that Alex Jorgensen ran with Ron Wood? Jorgy was the lone Norton dude for years, wasn't he?

I'm new to flat track racing, and haven't really dug into the history.

I know that the XS650 was a great flat tracker in the 70s with Kenny Roberts.

Did brit bikes dominate in the 60s?

I saw Jorgy Jorgenson ride the Ron Wood Norton at the Sacramento Mile and they were beutiful bikes like no other, very light one off engine cases, super light frame, the crew was like watching surgeons at work in the pits. they were also running the kawasaki tripple that day and they would wheelie at 120 down the straights, DAM IT! we need a mile or half mile national in california.

Is there a California flat track series?

The IFTA races on a 1/2 mile, 1/4 mile, and a bull rink. A goal of the organization is to bring a mile race back to Indianapolis. I'd love to see a Grand National race.

Thanks.

I Speedway racing, but the speedway track in Indy closed in June.

The guys that raced those Jawa Speedway bikes now run on some of the IFTA circuits.

Are there any larger 1/4 to 1/2 mile tracks they run in California?

Looks like they might want to create another class for Mr. Atherton to run in.

Lordy, he throws it into the turn.

The Norton is lovely.

DLRides,

That's a cool rocker boxer in your avatar. What's the story behind it?

Here's an interesting read. A buddy of mine (we worked together at Yamaha International) wrote this article.

Enjoy and let it bring back those good ole memories of Ascot Park!

Yeah that brings back some memories. Racing at Santa Fe Speedway, tho I was only a novice I always enjoyed watching the likes of Lawill, Mann, Roberts, Aldana, Springer, Brelsford, Romaro, Scott and all the rest. Those were the days. All the differant brands of bikes. Mostly today H-Ds still rule the 1/2 miles and miles, but it is good to see some other bikes out there now. Such was the case at the 1/2 mile race in Joliet Illinois last wekend. Now if they can just put a 1/4 mile and a TT track in there.
