If oil is wetting your leg when you ride, you probably have a head gasket leak. A casual leak doesn't really spew over the place as you ride, but when oil is getting forced out by engine compression, that's when things get messy.

Nice looking bike Aaron. I can't remember if you've posted a picture of it before.

Regarding taller bars... I put on Rox Risers and a set of standard-rise aluminum bars and love the setup. Getting the grips up a few inches higher really seems to help.

Found a set of 89 USD CR500 forks/triple on Craigslist for pretty much free. Gonna pick them up just because....I can? I know these are like the worst USD forks ever, but the stem/triple that bolts in to the XL could prove useful eventually.

Good luck getting the brake to work. And the triple stem has a bigger bearing than the XL so it doesn't fit.

The stem is the same size though right? So just a lower XL bearing and I
am good? That is what I thought I read in all the pages of BS I sifted through. Only the 89-90 have the straight stem after that it was larger. As for a brake no big deal I can get a complete CR setup for dirt cheap along with the front wheel.

Here's what you do. Look up a Honda parts fich for both the CR and XL stem and bearings and get the bearing # which you will search and get it's spec's. I just went through this with a XR600 I have. PITA!

I've posted one in the past, when I first "took delivery" of the bike from my dad's garage. Broken turn signals and all...



I just rode to work this morning (39*, by the way ) and didn't really get up on the pegs, but did notice a better feel on the bars. I'll get a good feel when I take her off road next...

I see that you have the auto decom cable installed and not the manual handle bar one. Back in the day we all threw away the auto one and just used the manual one. Made starting after a tumble easier when it loaded up and also to clear it out.

That pic was just in the middle of re-assembly. You can see the manual cable hanging down there next to the oil return line. I have since removed the auto cable, as it makes finding TDC thoughtless...

these are the best I can get due to the location.. The grey gasket material is from me when I was applying gasket to the valve cover when I remembered I didn't do it with the engine out of the frame. It got a little messy, but it's sealed along the valve cover mating surface.

The oil has to be coming from the rocker box area somehow. There is no oil near the spark plug. Oil can creep in from remote places. Try the baby powder trick and determine where it comes from. I would then pull the engine and very carefully inspect the cover and head and carefully reseal it.

Ok so 84-89 CR500s use the same upper/lower bearing as the XL/XR and bolt right on. 87-88 bikes had 43mm conventional cartridge forks(same as later 600/650l) and the 89-92 got 45mm USD showas. 90+ had the thicker stem base.

The forks are not very good, but I bet with a rebuild and new oil they will do better than the 39mm moped specials. They will look cooler at the very least

So today I unloaded the xl from my buddies truck (from the Moab trip) onto the lift for our dyno. Then I got the idea to dyno it. Wasn't sure how it was going to work out since it's an automotive dyno. Didn't work great as it spun the tire when I initially hit it, and I didn't have the rpm lead hooked up but at least I got to check the jetting with the wideband. This was with 13/44 gearing, 17psi tkc80 in 2nd gear.

34 hp doesn't sound bad. All you have in the bike is a piston and exhaust correct?
