Hey Guys & Gals,

Just found your forum. I've been lurking for a few days, but it took me that long to read through this particular thread front beginning to end. Great bikes and great posts.

First time post for me. I bought my 86 XL600R earlier this summer and I LOVE this bike. It runs great, pulls hard and starts second kick everytime. Well maybe a little tough to start hot, but thats okay, it gives me time to soak in the great scenery this bike takes me to.

Being the proud owner that I am, I thought I would post a few picks. Anyhow, hope to participate in these threads but mostly learn from the great ideas and help you guys seem to provide.

Cheers,
MotoXJB

Oops, upload file failures. I'll figure it out & post the pics soon.

Zapguy!

Yes, beer WILL be required for the tear down.

Recommend less beer for the re-install.

Thank you, I'll be here all week!

Sorry if I made you squint your eyes to see the pics.

I can ride, I just can't work a computer.

That is a beautiful '86! My favorite color scheme, too.

MotoXJB:
Welcome to the asylum. That is the cleanest XL I've seen in years! Congratulations on a great find.

Hope you enjoy it for many miles and years.

Regards,

That is the cleanest XL I have seen in a while too (I've only been into them 2 years) but I must say, I never liked that color scheme, or that of either the '86 or '87, until I saw that photo. Maybe it's the color of your older garage's wood offsetting the colors, but it finally looks good to me! It would probably look good on some brown dirt too!

Thanks for the kind words HeadTrauma, Waldo, & Zombie Stomp.

I have a million questions about these XL's, and the sport of Adventure Riding. Should I outfit my '86 or add a XR650L to the stable? Many things to ask and I now know I've found the place to seek these answers.

Anyways, off to Montreal (on a plane) for the weekend, but I already can't wait to get back, do some riding and chat with you guys about this stuff.

Great weekend to all.

Eek Holy Crap!

MotoXJB - That is the most pristine example of an '86 I've ever seen. Don't ride it!!!! Buy a cheap beater to ride, and save that one. It is a collectible. Never seen one that perfect and original.

I have the same year. Great bikes, enjoy whatever you decide.

Entirely too nice. Kick it off the stand, and throw a shovelful of dirt on it, so I won't be embarrassed to ride mine .

very nice!

it will look even better once covered in mud and a few scratches on the fenders from various trees.

i dont want to get opinionated and all................ but............. .
our XL600s are NOT special/collectible/antique or better than any other bike. they are just simple and honest. - and i am in LOVE with mine.

if they had thoughts i doubt they would give a stuff if they looked like mine (hideous), or like yours(gorgeous). they would just want to be ridden into the ground until a full rebuild is needed, then thrashed again, rebuilt again, thrashed, rebuilt etcetcetc.

personally this bike has taught me so much, i will only feel like i have nothing to owe it once i have taken it around the world - because thats what it wants.
it WANTS to be wheelied/dirty/dropped/repaired.
it WANTS just a chance to show up pathetic plasticy 2 stroke modern dirt bikes and shiny-arse sportsbikes.
it WANTS to do the same trip as a BMW dial-a-tractor but for 10% the cost, with homemade luggage racks.
it DOESNT GIVE A CRAP what colour it is, how pretty it is, how much dirt is on it(the more the better), what brand it is, whos riding it, where its going, where its been and especially doesnt give a stuff what other riders think of it.

it just wants to be ridden.

heres my favourite picture of mine having a quick oil change, halfway through a 10,000km trip. (yes that rear wheel is sposed to be silver):

considering the condition mine was in even before i left on my trip it is quite ridiculous that newer nice ones are sitting, waiting.

mine will be used/abused/jumped/toured/commuted/wheelied and generally thrashed until i am too old to gather the strength to kick the beast into life. then i will sell it to someone who resembles me at 19years old so it can go through the 60 years all again.

- thats what i think anyway. sorry, i couldn't help myself. what do you guys think?

I think I'd ride it even if it looked like this:
