NX650 Stock Exhaust Modifications?

I will retain the stock dual exhaust as it is one of its distinguishing features.

Has anyone modded the stock cans / mufflers besides removing the carbon clean out plates?

A picture of a sectioned can would be GREAT to view the internal design.

Take them off with a forklift, those cans weigh a TON.
I can't tell you what they are like inside, mine came from CA with a Supertrapp fitted.

I paid him with cash. It's almost as good as real money!

The serious spending is about to begin:
Ohio DMV, Service Honda, Race Tech, Progressive, Ebay, Amazon, Rocky Mountain, XR's Only, MRA, Hepco Becker, Sutton Cycle, JAG, and Cigar Mikes.

The cans weigh 7 lbs each side or so i have read. If true that is good given the welded on pipes are fairly long going forward to meet the headers. I would like to know if they are two or three chamber cans.

Good to see so many NX650 Fans

I have an 88 NX650, mint condition. They are a lot of fun, but geared towards a shorter rider I think.
Anyone want to buy mine?

strange you think that ..I'm 1.90m and never found it low ..far from it . Only concerns i've ever heard re the height were that if anything it was too tall for some riders.

clutch casing

Hi folks,
just want to know if the clutch casing for my bike ('93 model) can be swapped with cases from other years? Can a clutch case from the XR650L fit too? I need to replace mine, so any info would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Should fit fine, XL600 fit as well.

I love the look of the dual cans on the Dommie.....but ALL stock exhaust cans are very restrictive, and usually big power and throttle response killers. I'd either mod the stockers for better flow, or try and find some freer-breathing aftermarkets if any are still available. Nothing I own has the stock exhaust on it anymore

Direct cross over. No problem. The XL600 will fit but it does have it's Auto decom lever that you don't need.

Consolation

The bike was partially disassembled, degreased, and pressure washed today. It appears to have been priced right due to the surface corrosion of the frame and all of the plated hardware. The body will require many hours of repair and reconstruction.

That's part of the deal with a 25 year old machine that was used as intended.
Remembering that "Nothing worth while comes with out effort" will help keep me on track with this overhaul.

Two plans for the stock exhaust cans have been devised. We will see what is practical once they have been opened.

MARVING AMACAL Auspuff Silencers

WOW those look REALLY nice! - $ 750.00 plus shipping - Cool has never been cheap.

What are your thoughts on the headers if using these cans?

There's plenty of headers for single exhaust, but for dual cans the only option I've seen is the stock ones. Though I was thinking of getting new stock headers to go with the exhaust. The ones on it now are fine, but having nice shiny new ones would really help the look. I didn't think $750 was very expensive for exhaust; top of the line exhaust for CBR's is usually around $12 or $1500. My only concern with buying an exhaust for the NX is if it is cost effective. How much could it really improve performance?
