"Ammo boxes" without the weight
Only weigh 4 lbs. and cost $16 per: http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/w...3124_200153124
Might mount some up on my XT350.

Very nice find there MZR. These may be the ticket for penny tech panniers. The two biggest drawbacks to the steel ammo cans are weight and having to work around the diagonal reinforcement piece that can get in the way. These take care of both and they're dirt cheap.

That compares to the total ~23lbs total weight for unladen Jesse bags or Happy Trails bags. As for the diagonal support, I used an angle grinder to take it off on one side of each of the boxes. I also used it to trim some of the excess lip material off can lids. I might have knocked off three pounds total off the boxes that way. The other drawback that I have found is that they will not fit a full sized helmet, unlike some of the aluminum boxes. |

I bought a couple of those as well thinking I might try this, but yeah, they might as well be made of brick for what they weigh.
Those little plastic boxes for the XT sound pretty cooL!

I have such ammo boxes on my XT500 for about 1,5 yrs. Just have to reinforce the GIVI-Carrier that I modified.

Looks like the $16 dollar plastic ones also come in...
Drumroll please....... KatieM orange. ![]() Personally on the 650 I'm using a set of Night Vision Goggle cases I got at the Surplus for about 15 bucks I think . They're 11.5" X 13" X 6" so just two inches narrower than the plastic ones and they're made of steel.. And they don't weigh very much... Probably two or three pounds each.... I have to admit I didn't weigh them but they're pretty light. A little Hamertone Black and they look just fine. ![]() The other day I did an accidental "Sturdiness Test". Pulled into the shop a little bit hot. Caught the right rear corner of the R100GS bag with the left front corner of the left bag on the 650 and knocked the GS off the center stand... So the GS rolls forward luckily falls towards me... I catch it and now I'm holding two motorcycles up.. Barely... I managed to get the side stand down on the 650 and was able to rescue the GS without any damage to either. So I guess they're both prety tuff... John
