Here are my gutted Mermites on Happy Trails racks on my KLR.They were about $30 each plus a lot of work to gut them. I painted the inside with spatter paint to cover the remaining foam crud. One neat thing about them is the hardware is Stainless steel and the handles aluminium. I cut a rectangular hole in the inbside of the lids and made a door to cover it . This adds about 200 cubic inches of seperated storage in each box.
Loaded you definatly know they're with you and you quickly learn to dab straight out and NOT let your leg go back into the box. Once is enough of that.
And Drummer, I painted mine a matte blue to match the KLR dull blue plastic.

Crazydrummerdude, I will never again mess with the awful stripping agents necessary to take off that lead epoxy paint used on those boxes.

If I don't take 'em to a radiator shop to be dipped, I'll only rattlecan the interior with a light etching primer - and that's it.

Why indeed!

I miss my old grocery-getter -- at least it's still in the neighborhood. Never occurred to me to paint those things.

They are US Navy Korean war era. they are really big. somewhere around 18x26x10 (roughly) to mount them I used pucks on top and angle iron on the bottom to go over the rack/tubes.

They weigh 45 pounds together....got em at the army surplus in seattle.

Well this has given me an idea. Im working on putting together a Honda Rebel project bike to have as an around town bike. I may end up useing a couple of ammo cans for cargo boxes on it. Hell i may go all out and camo the bike.

I have painted mine, for two reasons:

1) to keep them cooler during summer
2) to hide their origin, in Austria it is forbidden to mount such unapproved luggage onto the racks

Cheers,
Greg

Anyone tried the plastic ones yet?

Has anyone tried these yet?

http://www.northerntool.com/shop/too...5437_200365437

Are they pretty heavy duty?

I want to mount them to my DR350 that I might get gently dropped now and then...

At about 42 bucks shipped (for the pair) I could afford to replace them if I wrecked hard but I'd like them to take a tip over without cracking or breaking...

Gonna try them.

I just ordered two of those boxes Jayhawk. I'll try and get pics and a report up, but I'm trying to get them built before I move in 9 days.

awesome :)

I got a pelican topcase now but more storage would be great :) I'm really just curious if they will crack or break if they get a little bump...

I painted mine silver mostly to keep them from becoming bike mounted ovens, but as the paint isn't holding up that well they may well become truck bed liner'd mini ovens anyway.
