Yamaha XS 650 Dualsort?

I guess this is the proper place to ask this.

Has anyone ever turned a Yamaha XS 650 into a dualsport? Has anybody ever seen one?

With all the talk about the new BMW F800GS it would seem that a guy could make a nice XS 650 dualsport.

If you bought everything used, bored the engine, got a different frame, aluminum swingarm etc. you could have one cool dualsport.

So, what do you think?

I havent built one but I have seen some set up for Vintage MX with Ceriani forks, 21" front wheel, a set of knobbies and a high level 2 into 1 exhaust.
Damn mean lookin bike along the same lines as a desert sled.

XS650s have been used as the basis for choppers, bobbers, flattrackers, cafe racers, sidehack racers, hill climbers, and whatever else folks could dream up. I recall seeing photos of a mini Jeep and a tractor powered by the OHC 650. I've heard of vintage MXers powered by XS650s, but not seen one.

Yamaha sold the XS650 here in the USA from the 1970 XS1 through the 1983 SK Heritage Special. They were sold in Canada at least through 1984. In the USA we got 2 different engine types, and the Europeans got a different one. The big differences were in the crank pins, rods and pistons. All were ball and roller bearing crank and cam, so were pretty robust.

I'm working on a DS that is more of the 50s-60s scrambler/desert sled variety, but know another guy working with monoshock rear suspension and long travel forks. I don't care to have mine that tall, but would like a bit more distance from the seat to the pegs, and improved suspension.

There are still a lot of XS650s around, and parts are readily available from several sources. Engines can be massaged fairly easily to 750cc, rephasing the cranks from 360 to 277 is being done. Bigger bores and longer strokes can be done, but everything costs $$. Twingle is easily accomplished by changing the cam, but hard on cam chains.

I'll have to find some old pictures, but my first bike was a '76 XS, and all i did was through a set of block pattern trail tires on it, and I hit the dirt. Geez, that was almost 20 years ago!!! I'm getting old!

The XS650 engine is heavy and a lot of the weight is toward the top. They vibrate a lot. They used to be cheap, but they are harder to find. By the time you are done, you will have a lot more $$$ into it than buying a new DR650, trust me. I think the motor is about 150-175 lbs maybe? Definitely heavier than the Triumphs I work on.

If it is something that you WANT to do to be different, than it is a cool project. Just sit down and put a pencil to everything before you start or you will have a $10k dirt bike before you know it. A flat track bike with a stock frame is a cheaper route. go to www.omars.com and talk to Phil. Nice guy.

I'm doing one for a guy with a Kennedy frame, pin drive knock off hubs, XS650 and punched to 750, R-1 front end.......Omars pipes....

This will be a very cool street bike, but not cheap.

Not wanting to hijack the thread...but

I did an SV650 with Ohlins supermoto setup. It was a real hoot with 85hp and it only weighed about 330lbs. The front triples fron a CRF450 will go into the SV headstock with some slight mods. I never put dirt tires on it, but you could probably get away with 17's and 19's. Stock, they get 60-65rwhp. It looked like it had a raked front, but the pic is deceptive.

If one wants to build a DSXS, a FT is a better place to start than a stocker.
