Which is faster....speedway or flattrack? Who are the fastest riders? This should answer it - Barry Briggs on a flattracker,not a bike he was familiar with,but seems to be doing ok using his speedway style technique.....Mert and Dick Mann can't do anything about Briggo going around the outside.

I'd love to know where that picture was taken because back in the very early 70's Barry ran at Santa Fe Speedway in Maywood Illinois. He ran the short track Grand Natonal, . He was running speedway looking frame with a Yamaha TD 250 roadracing twin in it. He made it to the final and was doing great till the end. Because he was riding the cushion he ran higher and higher. He didn't win but what a race!!!!

The caption says Santa Fe Chicago,I don't know how correct that is.I have a couple of books about Barry Briggs,and his trip to the US is mentioned in both of them....sounds like he gave the locals a bit of a fright.There is also a picture of him and Ivan Mauger flattracking,so they must of both been over there.

I haven't seen any XR750's racing in person,just our local flattrackers who mainly ran big singles....but I have seen long track speedway on a half mile.I'd say they were faster than a flattrack bike - they never shut the throttle and it's a 100mph lap all the way around.

Yeah, that track was considered to be in Chicago, gone now, but was really in Maywood Illiniois. It's a good bet I was there at that race. As for Ivan I heard of him, but never saw him race.

Nice pictures, I wish that back in the day when I started racing they would have let me start that young. Back in my day you had to be 16. Oh well, I still had a lot of fun
