Long Lost Ride Report Day 1
There's a RR I'd not posted, from last summer, and I've got an extra day this weekend, so I thought I'd get started on it...
I went on a few rides last summer (school, life, etc), but was loosely following some of the challenge points, so I set off to check out Dagger Falls. Phil wanted to go, but couldn't make it for a couple of days, so I set out on my own for the first couple of days. ![]() It was rafter's city there, and a TON of people, so I doubled back, and spent the night back in Bear Valley and had the whole place to myself. ![]() ![]() ![]() I, of course, had the usual RWC midnight visit from some large animal wanting to sift through my things, but a few well-thrown rocks (and a .44 in the other hand) sent it off into the night.

Day 2, Morning.
The next day day, I wanted to see some more sights north of Stanley, where I'd not been before.
First stop was Trinity Lakes. Two small Lakes, but very pretty. ![]() ![]() Continue north on the road, and head north instead of the usual right that takes you to Pinyon, and you're on your way to Seafoam Lakes (3 of them). ![]() The lower portions of Seafoam can be ridden on a larger (950) DS with ease. ![]() ![]() ![]() But, as you start to climb, you'll wish you were on something smaller. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The climb is well worth it, and all 3 lakes are incredibly gorgeous. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I saw a trail, and had a rare desire to hike up and get a view. Granted, I didn't have the best hiking apparel... but life goes on. ![]() The hike was a little more than I was ready for, but the views were worth it. ![]() ![]() ![]() I should have followed my instinct and headed into Stanley, but I was pulled to Kings Hill, to see the backside views of Pinyon. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() In was in fact VERY pretty up there, and I could see the backside of Pinyon Peak Lookout. ![]() I'd been eyeing the rolling clouds all day, and they finally caught up to here on the hill. They DUMPED hail on the trail, making it slick as snot. ![]()

Day 2, Afternoon
I hussled off King's Hill as quick as I dared, given the hail on the trail (hey, I rhyme!)... which put my into Stanley well after when I 'meant' to get there. A smart man would have skipped the 2nd half of the day's ride, and headed to Challis Hot Springs where I was suppose meet Phil for the night.
But I'm not smart. I filled-up in Stanley, and headed due north, to find Hindman Lake. ![]() On the way, I went up the old lookout, and dropped off the ATV track from the back (Tom's great suggestion). ![]() ![]() It was a great ATV trail, and even the FS road was an exceptional ride. ![]() ![]() There were multiple lakes back there... I wasn't sure which one was Hindman, and I didn't really care. They were all beautiful. ![]() Again, a smart man would have seen this great camp ground, and called it good for the night. ![]() ![]() I eventually ran out of road, but did see some single track... ![]() ![]() ![]() It seemed to lead to yet another backcountry lake. ![]() A smart man would have appreciated the beauty of the lake, and headed back. Not I; I could see the single track wrapping around the lake, and heading up the mountain side. ![]() ![]() The trail got more and more gnarly... ![]() ![]() ... until I realize I was in over my head on a loaded 650. ![]() I promptly pulled an RWC and dumped it at the most inopportune location available. Tried to get it up on the trail. Too heavy. I had the please of pulling EVERYTHING off the bike, just to lighten it enough to fight the pig back onto the trail for 30 minutes, then spend another 15 getting it pointed back the right direction. ![]() With the sun setting, I knew I was in for a long night. ![]() I headed back down the narrow trail, back down the FS road, and got into Stanley as the sun set. ![]() Not only did I have the pleasure of riding from Stanley to Challis in the pitch dark, with a 35w headlight, but the clouds opened up and POURED on me, the ENTIRE way there. I was so cold and soaked I could barely recall my name by the time I got to the Challis campground. Got there, and of course, they were closed. I pushed my bike around the gate, found Phil, and prayed the hot springs were open. Incorrect. Lovely. We set up camp in the pouring rain, shed our soaking clothing and spend most of the night trying to get warm before dozing off.
