Going well.

I started yesterday like this:

So I pulled the old piston and installed the new one:

Popped the rings off to measure them, and ensure they were in specs:

And then worked the sleeve over the piston:

Took my shiny new head work:

And popped it on:

Then got the cams back on and spec'ed them:

Then popped the top on:

Slid the starter back into place:

And then pulled the steering head apart for a good cleaning and inspection:

Nasty:

Cleaned all that crap out of there, re-greased it, and set it back to specs:

That was all yesterday.

This evening, I put the carb back on, and got everything piped back into it... followed by pulling the drain plug to let the oil drip overnight.

Tomorrow I pull the side cover to check the oil screens, and then start on the exhaust.

Well, Hell. I'll keep the bike then!!! When are we leaving dude??

RWC, I love ya man. Sport Touring was never your thing and most people don't understand the BMW thing anyway. She's just so solid, comfortable, quick, smooth, reliable. Everything my first wife was not. I can't just turn my back on her!!

The Strom has a quality all her own. I can pack more on her and now that she's scuffed up a little I won't be afraid to take her for a litttle off road camping. Something the Beemer can't do. I'll never be as good off road as you guys, but there are a lot of sane dirt/gravel roads I can explore at my speed and paved roads in the Northwest that I have not explored.

And my little Black/Red "Dawn Of The Living Dead" Honda will let me kick around the Foothills and Hemingway this year.

When you get that KLR together let's get some "Road Time" on her. I'll race you on Rt 13 to Elk City and you will see why I love the Beemer.

BTW, Great job on the KLR!! You make it look so easy and I'm sure it's not. Can't wait to ride with you to see the girl F-L-Y!!!

Now, now. I put a lot of miles on my XS1100 Special... and that bike was fast.

But, once I hit the DS realm... that was it for me ~ I never looked back.

No, I assure you, it's a PITA, and a lot of work.

Pavement =

I will say, though, that I do love trips to the coast, and I do love running up Highway 1.

Plus, Route 66 is near the top of my list for rides in the next few years... and there's a lot of pavement in that ride... but there's also some great gravel.

Ya, that's the part that sucks. You have to go through 3 specific heat cycles too, over the course of a few hundred miles, with as much engine breaking as possible... so it'll be a while before I really get to open it up and test it out.

Duh. 60+hp from a twin vs 45hp from a single. I'm bad at math, and can still figure that one out.

All the same, I'm up for a day ride once I get it broken in a couple of weeks, and slip the new tires on.

Going fast on pavement (in corners) freaks me out (don't exactly know why... I guess it's because I can feel/control the slide in the dirt... but slide on the pavement usually ends in tears), but 80mph in the dirt? Sure! ()

And I can easily do 30+ MPH OVER the posted speed on curves and it feels controlled. On dirt is feels like death is always near. I'll even take the KLR and you take the Strom. You see it's not just going fast but HOW you take the corners.

BTW, When you get the KLR back together maybe I can once again con you with cash to tear down my little thumper?? Maybe??? Just enough to replace that seal at stop the leak?????????

Okay. After the KLR, I have the XRR ~ then we'll tear into your XL. If we're going to do it... you may as well do the 'whole shi-bank'. Does it eat oil? If so, it might be good to pull the sleeve, and have it honed to get the cross hatch back ~ or even bored-out and put the next sized-up piston in it.

Ya... but I like to be able to cross 'em up on the corners ~ that's where the real fun is.

However, somewhere, Heath has a perfect example of my exuberancel eading to a fantastic high side at the dunes.
