I asked them when they were going to update the BMW Zumo and this is what they said:

"Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I will be happy to help
you with this. Unfortunately I don't have a definate date for this
update. You may want to keep an eye on garmin.com for this.

Should you have further questions please contact Garmin Product Support
by replying to this email or contact our Consumer Support Line at
800-800-1020 Monday-Friday 8am-5pm CST."

I can't really complain since I don't own a BMW and I won the BMW Zumo in a raffle

I have been talking with Garmin Auto Tech support regarding some route transfer problems I am having with my BMW Zumo and during our conversation I asked for clarification on the difference between the BMW Zumo and the Zumo 550 firmware. And I asked them why the BMW version has not received any updates.

His response was that (to his knowledge) because the BMW Zumo came out later that the Zumo 550 it's initial firmware version has the same updated firmware as the Zumo 550 with current updates even though the version numbers are different. The version numbers are different because they are actually two different Zumo models.

Unfortunately I am still working with them regarding my problems. But I am very pleased with the tech support from Garmin so far.

The BMW Zumo does not have the option to turn off auto recalculate when off route so it is not as up to date as the latest 550 version.

Don't be. . this persons statement is absolutely rubbish! Like 1 post above me said: If it does not have "recalculation on/off" its not a 3.30v 550!

In fact it's not a 550.. but something old and full of bugs like it once used to be....

All Righty Then... just trying to convince myself I don't have a POS "full of bugs". If I can just get my Routes to transfer correctly I will be happy for now. Then I can move on to the next level of disappointment.

Yeah but I am in the next level of disappointment. I lobbied my dealer for the Zumo when I bought my new ADV (which was not included in the promotion) and now that I have it wish I had a 'real' 550. If only I had know that BMW was lying about what it was and was not...

You didn't read this post from another thread?

http://advrider.com/forums/showpost....3&postcount=22

According to a previous post, when an XM receiver was plugged into the BMW Zumo the Zumo responded with "XM is not supported". The text on the box would indicate that only a Traffic Message Channel (TMC) FM receiver is supported (in the box).

I have highlighted some inconsistencies on the comparison chart.

Dang! No I didn't. In fact I didn't think to even search here, Zumo 550 means to me a specific model with specific features. It never crossed my mind that BMW would offer a 'Zumo 550' that really wasn't...

That really bugs me, but live and learn I guess. Thanks for the chart...

I thought it was most useful as an indication of how willing they are to mislead their customers with regards to the specification of their competitor's - AKA their own supplier - product.

First, I want to be clear - I am the last person that would defend the BMW ZUMO. But...(you knew that was coming), even with the misleading "fact-sheet" showing the BMW Navigators vs. Garmin units, BMW has never described the BMW ZUMO as a Garmin 550 device. It is a BMW ZUMO NAVIGATOR.

My guess is that BMW NA contracted with Garmin to produce a thousand or so units - cheap - to use as bike purchase incentives. It remains to be seen if, or how often, ongoing software maintenance was included in that contract.

Sorry, but totally incorrect. In fact, the PDF on the documentation CD that CAME WITH THE UNIT is titled "BMW_zumo_550_OM_EN.pdf"

That wasn't the only indication but it's the one I have the facts on in front of me...

I stand corrected. And, if anyone paid for one of these you should have a case to be made to BMW, and Garmin, that this unit is not a Zumo 550 since that unit clearly does not meet all of the 550 specifications.
