Triton. First French jet. On the Constellation. In the early 70's I was working in Zimbabwe (Rhodesia then). I was the workshop forman in an earthmover tire retreading company. A scheme came up to fly to the copper mines Katanga in the Congo and inspect worn tires there & fly the good ones back to be retreaded & returned a month later & repeat the process. I was to be the person to fly up and do the tire selection. Unfortunately the schemes never came off. The plane was a Connie. This was during the height of sanctions busting in Rhodesia. The Connie used to land & stop at the remotest corner of the airfield; someone got out & covered the registration numbers before it taxied to the hangers. The flight from Rhodesia to the Congo would have been over the eastern part of Angola since we could not overfly Zambia where the RAF had Gloster Javelins stationed (probably slower than the Hawker Hunters the Rhodesians had). I went to check the Connie for size but never got to fly in it. Regularly saw one of my favourite planes flying there: Enlish Electric Canberra. |

Thought I'd forgot, didn't you...... Another fine product from Grumman, the F 10F Jaguar. First variable sweep combat aircraft in service. Oops, not in service. Test pilot Corwin "Corky" Meyer, who was the only pilot to fly the Jaguar, described it as entertaining to fly "because there was so much wrong with it." Interestingly, he found the novel wing-sweep mechanism (which ironically was much more complicated than the one used by the Bell X-5 and later adopted by the F-111, F-14 Tomcat and Panavia Tornado) to be the only feature that worked flawlessly.

I had a five hour class. Anything going on in here?
Here's one to look at. I don't think it's been seen in here before.
