i looked at pictures of all the suspects, Mig 1, Mig 3, Mig 7, Lagg 3, Lavochkin La 5, etc, nothing looked close to me. a good stumper!

The truth is, I don't know how you'd differentiate between the Yak-3 and the Yak-9 based on exterior appearance. So we'll have to give this one to you.

I guess the wheel covers are shaped a little differently.

FW 187. Kurt Tank designed a real "fighter" that could match or excede single engine aircraft for manuverability and speed. Never made it very far past the prototype stage, but had very impressive performance.

I'm on a roll. Incorrect. The He 177 used coupled D-B 601 engines. V-12, same engine (basically) that powered the Me 109, the Me 110, the FW 190 D9, etc etc. Two were joined at the crankcase, and while a very neat technical solutuion to reduce drag on a 4 engine aircraft, unfortunately they were very prone to catching fire. When they caught fire, they usually burned straight thru the main spar, a firewall having been deleted to save weight and space.

I think that's an He-177, though. Don't let the round cowlings fool you...the engine nacelles contain twinned V-12 motors.
