IIRC the clutch mechanism (Flexidyne) to the prop shaft was a canister of steel beads surrounding the driven plate. As the canister gained speed the beads impinged tighter and tighter on the driven plate.

As I heard it, Molt Taylor was quite the character.

EDIT: And by the way, the craft pictured is an AEROCAR I and had brief exposure on the Bob Cummings show.

Interesting side note on the XF-88, one of the models was used for supersonic propellor research. The prop tips went supersonic by design. Supposedly made an unearthly wail when it was running, ear splitting to the point of painfull. There's an MP3 of it in flight around somewhere, when I fine Klay's last plane I'll see if I can locate it. The prop research showed promise but never went anywhere.
