Ouch.....Dude!!!!

Mine may be shorter but I'll have one on each side. At least after June I will.

What is that? Pelvic fracture? Or Femur or both?

O7/14/08 - Hit by truck (Yes, I now know what it feels like)

07/15/08 - Triple fracture - left acetabulum.
- Internal fixation - 1 plate, six screws.

08/29/08 - Avascular Necrosis of left femur head.
- Total hip replacement - left hip.
- not a candidate for resurfacing.

12/31/08 - artificial hip socket detaches from pelvis.
- hip revision (replace artificial hip - left)

Picture is of incision 20 days post-op from last surgery, 01/20/09.

6 weeks on Monday. Saw the Doc today. Full weight bearing. No crutch, no cane. When I asked the Doctor about his thoughts on riding, he said "don't wipe out". Off to the garage!!!!!!!

Not really. I have been partial weight bearing for 6 weeks so just need a couple of days to get some strength and coordination back.

Prior to the surgery I was taking 4-6 Aleve a day. I have not taken a thing since day 9 after the surgery.

My frustration is that I am very active and want to get back to doing everything right away.

I am having the left on done June 18 and hope to be fully back to all my pre-surgery activity by fall. That includes hockey, riding, golfing, hiking and all the other fun stuff. I used to snicker when people would get them done and then say "I can't believe I waited so long to do it"....you konw what? I can't believe I waited so long to get it fixed.

Riding will build strength and endurance. I got on my bikes at the 6-week, 3-day point and the difference it made was phenominal. I can safely say that most of the effects were due to the mental side of being able to do something "normal", but getting on and riding made me work the motorcycle muscle memory. That was a big help.

It's funny: my Dr. gave me the same "just don't crash" advice when I told him I was already riding.

A little bit of advice; don't push it. I know you're dieing to get on you bike, I haven't ridden mine in 9 months. You should make damn sure your hip has the strength AND stability to hold you and your bike up if you happen to slip while at a stop never mind a "wipe-out". Just remember; your ass was cut in half. Not only the muscle, but also the nerves that tell your brain where the hell your leg is in relation to your body were cut. It's going to take more than a couple of days to gain the strength and stability you're looking for.

What kind of therapy has your MD prescribed. My surgeon had a PT come to my home 3 times a week for 6 weeks (until I was 100% weight bearing) from the day after I got out of the hospital. I've had 4.5 hours of PT every week since. I can not imagine going through this without physical therapy. I'm only now able to stand/balance one my bad leg for 5 to 10 seconds at a time.

If it is your left hip that was worked on be damn careful while getting on your bike. Pivoting on a hip that hasn't had a chance to strengthen is begging for a dislocation; it doesn't take a lot of displaced torque to pop that muther out. A week and a half after my last operation I got up in the middle of the night to take a piss. I still don't know what I did, but that son of a bitch popped right out of the socket. I've been wearing one of these 24 hours a day for 14 weeks now: not fun.

I got the base model; doesn't come with the blond.

Just sayin' be smart and take it easy. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

I did home PT for 3 weeks then outpatient since. I do 2-2 1/2 hours, three times per week. I am not riding yet as I do have some concerns about stability. I am not necessarily "height gifted" and the Capo has a high seat so I am not yet able to swing the leg over it anyway.

I got cleared for Full Weight Bearing yesterday but still use a cane for longer distances as the leg is still admittedly weak. I haven't walked on it fully for 6 weeks so that can be the reason behind that. Now that I am FWBAT, I will be getting back to the gym to ride the bike and work on endurance and upper body strength. A few leg excercises as tolerated. The good thing is my PT is a fabulous babe so motivation is not an issue.

I get the whole ounce of prevention thing.....it's just the ton of desire I am struggling with. At lease now I have a hand free to hold my beer.

BTW, I haven't taken anything for pain since week two. Not even a Tylenol. And that is with the other side still pending to be done.
