Check out Colebatch's build thread (and all his other threads while you are at it) I think he just fitted one, and had some info in there.

Welcome to the Xchallenge family, you found all the Xbike threads?

Thanks for the welcome! So far I have five threads. The index, farkles, Colebatch's RTW, front suspension and this one. Am I missing something important?

I saw the RTW thread but didn't see any comments on what the exhaust was like, only pictures.

I am stuck between getting the SR or the LV. The SR seems to be a better exhaust but the LV is so much cheaper; I am wondering if that extra cost is worth it.

Something else about the SR. There is no heat shield by the connection with the header pipe. Anyone got burnt pants from this yet?

I have the LV, in the farkles thread you can see where I built a bracket to keep it from hitting my radiator hose. Some have had issues with it as it does not use the OEM mount.

As far as other threads, there are a bunch. some guys have done build threads I do not have listed here. The index is not maintained anymore so I periodically search in thumpers to be sure I don't miss anything.

There is some good info in the Xcountry thread here.

Snooker has a good web site with lots of info, including links to key ADV threads, it is in his sig, you will see posts by him in all these threads. There are lots of talented guys who have done real cool stuff to G650 Xbikes on here.

For entertainment value in ride reports metaljockey and colebatch are top performers on xchallenges, along with several others who I am forgetting to mention.

Also, you should check out my CDR thread, as I need the readers. LOL!

I have seen metaljockey's ride reports on a SA bike forum. Awesome stuff!

Thx VM Rob ... I would also recommend a read of McGiggle's ride from UK to India and back on X-Challenges.

Rone has ridden from Belgium to South Africa on his XC and is about to ride back ... but so far has not ridden a ride report.

Rade also had a trans Africa ride on an XC but also sadly no ride report.

And Langkat, for good info on doing up an X bike on a budget its hard to go past anything The Jester does to his bike.

Other nicely modded X-challenges that are great to read about and see how other guys incorporated cool ideas into their XCs are those of HP2, Finnduro, DK, Clearandlock, Timpo, AZ, MTbiker78, and others

Day 4, man, where's day 4??
We're reading every word of the story, you know, the one you're probably just now writing...

On topic of exhausts: I'd think I'd be getting the SR, if I didn't already have the LV, which is good value for the dollar.
Would like to knock down the LV sound level a bit though, maybe I'm getting a little old and more sensitive. All other options seem just way too loud for my taste.

I still have to do the sound recording for you .. but the SR is a lot quieter than the Remus I had on the last 2 years. Its a lot closer to stock volume levels than it is to the Remus. And it definately more powerful than the Remus. That I can confirm

Decided on the SR exhaust. Seems to be a quieter and better performing exhaust.

The SR seems to be more structurally sound in the way it attaches to the bike as well.

Thanks for all the advice

My LV arrives on Saturday...got a great deal from James at Renazco...if anyone is looking for one...now's the time! I also plan on coating my header so that the water tube issue would be somewhat solved...looking to do a mount in the long-run

I'll have my OEM (with battle-scars) available for cheap if anyone's interested...local pick-up MUCH better...

Cheers,
Nadim

Mounting solution for the LV

Hey there,

Got my LV a while back but just got to installing it...I wasn't a fan of the LV factory installation, so decided to design something simpler and sturdier...

Ideally, I wanted to mount the can in TWO locations so there will be no rotation forces on the neck of the exhaust and making the header closer to that water hose...but that's a longer way ahead...for now, I opted to reuse the OEM frame "hole", use a spacer and install the can accordingly...

For now, I'm using a 13mm OD x 6mm ID x 50mm L spacer (shiny item in the middle of the below picture). With an M6 x 100mm bolt. It works fine, but I mistakenly chose the wrong size. So I opted to upgrade the size to match the OEM bolt size of M8, getting a 110mm length one (so that the bolt inside the wheel well would have enough bite), along with a 20mm OD x 8mm ID x 50mm spacer. All was ordered from McMaster...so should arrive by Friday and will do the switch...I'm using a serrated nut instead of a nyloc nut due to the potential heat.

The 50mm length of the spacer is to keep the can from touching the R&G tidy tail blinker...I am sure if you have other blinkers you can manage with a shorter spacer, and therefore apply less leverage on that bolt/mount.

Cheers,
Nadim

Clearance at the blinkers is ~1" (25mm)...good enough. This mounting system also drops the can a bit so that the OEM plastic is far enough even when compressed under soft bags (like the Giant Loop).
