I'm hoping there's a car guy or two here to help me with a surprise my wife left for me. Sometime during my deployment, an issue popped up with the brakes on my 2006 Chevy Silverado. When braking, it seems the ABS kicks in just before I come to a stop. This happens every time, in forward and reverse. No issues while slowing, it's just when coming to a complete stop and kicks in below 10 MPH. There are no dashboard lights that come on to indicate an error condition.

The brake fluid looks filled. Other than that, any thoughts?

Thanks,
Joe

Sounds like one of the ABS wheel speed sensors or a related part is failing. These can be a bitch to troubleshoot. The reluctor ring could be bad, which can be a pain (and expensive) if it's part of the hub assembly.

Anyone need a hitch-hauler? Selling mine, it's the Discount Ramps aluminum/steel version for a Class II.

http://www.discountramps.com/motorcycle-carrier.htm

In good shape, has the anti-tilt lock on the tongue and side ramp, works great have had good luck with it just don't need it any more. $75 and it's all yours...will throw some cool foot-peg anchors I made, a nice way to secure a bike on it that makes a good safe back-up to straps.

Also selling a Fox Outrider enduro jacket, sized XL, in good shape. $40

That looks to be the issue. I did a search including "speed sensor" and it seems to be common problem on GM vehicles in the snow belt. Thanks!

I agree with dox. Try cleaning them first, see if it goes away. Also IIRC 2000 give or take on the year Silverados were subject to an abs recall for this issue. It's a fairly common gm issue.

You need a friend with a good scan tool to watch each wheel speed sensor while braking

The steering wheel turns to the right when the ABS kicks in. Does that mean the right front is braking more, indicating the ABS issue is on the left?

Armmyjoe- I had an ABS modulator go out on an 03. I pulled into a dealer, said if it was pricey I'd just pull the ABS fuse and they were very eager to replace a $900 part for free even though it was way out of warranty. So playing dumb (easy for me) at a dealer may work. -Mike

If it's just corrosion between the sensor and the hub assembly, it looks to be an easy fix. But I'm not too interested in jacking the truck, pulling the wheel, brake caliper, and rotar in ~30 degree temps. I pulled the ABS fuse and I'll work on it when it's a bit warmer. It least now I won't have to worry about rear-ending someone because the ABS increased my stopping distance.
