Colorado -- Flat Tops Trail & Autumn Colors

Those who live in Colorado know how spectacular the autumn colors are right now. This is for the rest of you, who live in FLAtter parts of the world

I departed Denver on Saturday morning and after a quick bit of superslab, I exited I-70 and headed over Berthoud Pass into the Fraser Valley.

And took US40 through Kremmling to the Trough Road

Trough Road is part of the Colorado Headwaters Scenic Byway. It's a pretty ride:

After reaching downtown Yampa, I turned west onto the Flat Tops Trail scenic byway.

The scenery along this 82 mile dirt road was spectacular:

From the end of the byway, I took more dirt roads over Yellowjacket Pass (one of several so named in the area):

And chased the setting sun to find a good place to camp:

The next morning, with temperatures in the 30s (F), I was up early and riding beautiful forest service roads through the Williams Fork Mountains, west of Oak Creek, Colorado:

finally popping out near Winter Park, Colorado. I'd never been up Rollins Pass, so I decided to make it a side-trip. The road up is currently a dead-end to motorized vehicles, so it would be a 22 mile round trip back to WP. It was worth it:

I was riding on an old railroad grade, and spied a cool abandoned trestle:

At the top:

Imagine how unforgiving this place must have been in the winter

But it sure is pretty in the Fall:

After coming back through Winter Park, I headed back over Berthoud Pass and was home for dinner on Sunday.

As you can see, quite a few other Coloradans were out for a "fall colors" scenic drive too. But they stuck to pavement, I had the dirt roads all to myself.

My weekend ride. 590 miles, about half of that dirt:

I know our riding season is drawing to a close out here and that some of you in FLAtter, more tropical areas will be riding all winter. That's okay, we'll get through the winter thinking and planning and dreaming about all of the high roads we want to ride next summer....oh yeah, and we'll be skiing too

those are awesome pics, man. I've been looking into some Colorado locales lately - looking for a cool place to move come graduation next spring. Damned if those pics didn't just about make up my mind. Thanks for posting them.

Great pics. We rode some of the same roads a couple of weeks back but the colors were not as good. Glad you had a safe trip.

The high country is really beautiful this time of year.

Yep, I'd definitely give this all up to go back to the DC Beltway

Glad to see my RR has finally de-lurked you. Now Sing it with me, brother:

Donít go back to Rockville
Donít go back to Rockville
Donít go back to Rockville
And waste another year
