Confused; City Nav 2008 Update CD

Recieved my MapSource City Navigator Nt north America 2008 update cd about 2 months ago from Garmin... went to the site and got it for free. Finally had a chance tonight to load cd onto my computer.... what the hell... loads but maps are locked and they want me to pay $69 or $70 bucks for the unlock codes....

now if I remember when I sent in for the cd I thought the update was free? Why would they sent me a free cd several months ago and now when I try to put on my computer I need to pay $$$ for unlock codes...

Please tell me I'm clueless and missing something....

I'm going to call garmin in the morning..... garmin update cd came in brown evelope with cd inside but with no codes or anything???

Please give me some info...

You're clueless and missing something. In your description of the issue for starters....

Did you recently buy a GPS, after the release date for CN8, and therefore were allowed a free upgrade to the latest map data? If so, you should have gotten an unlock code. It would likely have been between the cardboard of the plastic packaging the disc case came in.

If you just have an old unit and wanted to upgrade map data, it's not free. You get to pay for it like everyone else.

My unlock code was on a green sticker on the CD case.

talked with Garmin and they sent me the wrong CD. It's a regional update CD??? None the less I have to go to Bes Buy or CC and buy an update cd for $70 bucks or so and it will have the unlock codes.

GPS is a BMW Navigator III.

I hope you don't mind if I jack the thread for one quick question - when you unlock the CD, does it tie to that computer or to that GPS? I've got a couple different computers, can I install everything on one, load up the GPS, then move the software to a different computer?

Tied to GPS

My understanding is the software is associated to the GPS. You can install it on any number of CPUs.

Yes that is correct. It is tied to the GPS. You can load it onto many computers but only one GPS.

Each computer will ask for the unlock code.

And all you have to do is save it from the first one into a file, and then copy that file onto each of the other computers. Install it, and that will allow you to download the maps. No problem.

So you are telling me that if my family has 3 Garmin GPS's, I would have to buy map's for each unit? If so, that is BS.

You may think it's BS,but that is Garmins new strategy.
Used to be able to unlock maps to 2 GPS units, that option went away
around June of this year.

Wish they would at least offer a multiuser or a family pack such
as is available on computer operating systems/programs.

For now,you will have to play Garmins game,or go to another sandbox!

Do you have an official City Nav version for your computer? If so, then the process for map database updates is to have Garmin send you an update DVD for free. But after you load it, you have to pay the update fee online, typically $75 or so. If you go to a retail store, my guess is that they don't have update DVD's - they'll sell you a brand new full version, not the update version.

Map database updates are not generally free. The exception is if you bought the the new map database recently, either bundled with a GPS or separately - there is a grace period of free updates, although I think it varies with the product.

MapSource updates (the program that loads the map database, does trip planning, and copies stuff to your GPS) are free and available online.

Some GPSs that have bundled map databases include rights to the PC version, some don't.

Garmin used to give two unlock codes per database so you can use it on two GPS's, but this has changed to one recently. If you're updating from older versions you sometimes are "grandfathered in" to have two licenses. I'm using CN 2008 for two GPS's, but that's because my previous City Select V5 and V7 licenses allowed two GPS's.

Don't throw away the update DVD. It may be the right thing after all.
