Race against the sun...

Rode Saturday morning for the 1st time in almost 3 months. Had the notion late Friday night to take off early and try to jet up the mountain somewhere to catch the sunrise. Got up a few minutes before 6am, to the shop, suit up and on the road around 6:30am. Not a bad idea except for the fact that the clouds got worse the higher in elevation I went. Rode up through Wilson's Creek, Mortimer, Edgemont and knew there'd be no sunrise to see with all the fog, completely overcast and rain that appeared to have already been through. Only got a couple pics...

Hit the BRP back down to Jonas Ridge Outfitters a little after 8am for a quick breakfast sandwich and back down 181, explored a couple side roads, then down Craig Creek, Wilson's Creek, & back to the shop. Saw a deer, turkey, a crane, and rabbits on this peaceful solo journey. Started to clear up and the sun was coming out as I neared the shop around 10am. Passed more bikes getting out by this time and thought to myself..."wonder who will come across my freshly spun tracks?"

Just got to days inn and dried off a little. It is raining its ass off. So far I just went up Richland rd. The rocks are real slick with the heavy KLR and rain. here is a crappy pic from my phone at the bottom before the rock climb up.

I am going to head over to mortimer now the rain let up a little then head to the BBQ next to the days inn for dinner.

They think she may have wrecked somewhere along the way.

They found the girl last night. She crashed off 321 somewhere on the way home and was stuck in the truck for 5 day. They they she is gonna live.

That is great news!!

It must have been pretty scary to be stuck down there for almost a week!

I'm sure part of the reason it took so long is that she was found on the opposite side of the hwy..

It's not clear how Amber ended up in the ravine. Troopers at the scene said it appeared she left the northbound lane of 321, went through the median and crossed both southbound lanes before going off the road. She went up an embankment, through the kudzu and then down another embankment before her vehicle came to a rest.

That part of her mysterious disappearance remains under investigation. The greater mystery, however, was solved. She was found alive.

So later on Monday after richlands I ended up riding down Globe rd. then over to Mortimer and up 192/Grassy Prong. Then rain just did not let up. But I had fun anyway. I wanted to do a lot more riding but the rocks were really slick with the pig, plus I was by myself and did not want to slip off a bank somewhere, I might still be there. Here are some pics.

everyone knows where this is.

192/grassy prong

Eastern Continental Divide, before I got out the camera you could see GF MTN in the background, the clouds rolled in fast.

BR Parkway

I be back this fall, hope I can ride with some of you guys next time.

Too bad it had to rain on ya....but that may have been better than being too hot and dusty....and congrats on finding some fun stuff!

I like the looks of how you set up that KLR. (bedliner black?)

Did you get a chance to explore wet clay down here?

p.s. shout out when you come back...hopefully my schedule will be clear.

So Kevin, if you live in the "good carolina" why are you always riding in the best carolina? And don't tell us it's the only way to get to Virginia because we all know you hate Virginia!

Any of you guys know if wet camp gap access from caney fork/sugar creek is still blocked, at least to 4wd access? I'm not riding, but thinking about walking in from BRP and camping there this weekend. Blueberries should be ripe.

Funny thing, I backpack and camp right in the thick of them every year, and have yet to see a bear. The only bear I've seen around there was running across the road around the Devil's Courthouse. I've encountered several in the smokies and here in NW Ga, but none around the Shining Rock/Pisgah area.
Take a some jello pudding and powdered milk and those little graham cracker shells.

There are bears up there too...I still have a dent in my car from hitting one just past 'the store' on 321 right past where it goes from 4 lanes to 2...
back in '97 or so...

On a different note, Jagd, was that you i passed yesterday around 5'ish, riding through Granite Falls/Hudson, Hwy 321, on your KLR?
