when you start looking at the small oil capacity of some of these newer thumpers, you also realize 2 qts in the xr is a nice amount.

I did the XR650L on a very similar trip earlier this year. I set up the XR400 pretty similarly to do this trip, with the intention to have more fun offroad. I installed the big tank to increase my range, wider, taller bars, headlight, and even my windshield and airhawk seat cushion for more hwy comfort.

To be quite honest, besides not having the 650's push button start, the XR400 did great as an adventure bike. With the 16t front sprocket, it cruised at 65mph on the hwy for about 4 hrs, 180 miles. I got about 40 mpg avg with my heavy right hand and the altitude, increasing the mileage when i used premium gas up to 45.

It was a big group event, and I only covered part of one of the groups I lead. I'm terraxpeditions.

I'll second that! I laid the bike over on a rock a few years ago and unknowingly put a hole in the oil filter cover. I estimate I lost 1 1/2 qts before I discovered it and got it patched. Rode 25 miles of trail and road back to camp on 1/2 qt. in it with no problems.

New Tank

Need the help of all you XR experts. I am looking to add a new gas tank to my 400, and wondering what you all like the best. I am thinking that a 4 gal. will work best. Looking at IMS, CLark or any other suggestions. Things like best fit, do the holes line up and if any are known for leaks.

I've had the IMS 4 gallon on my 400 for several years. Fit and finish is good. I love having the extra range.

nice how acerbis makes even their colored plastic see thru.
those acrebis seemed overboard on size to me.
i saw a see thru clarke and it's a funky yellow color new.
looked nasty. imo, ims is the best middle ground.
it get aprox 175-185 miles on a tank and that's fine for me.
guess is i was an OZ ouback rider the acerbis would be the choice, but in colorado i can find gas in that range.

all depends on your state regs.
you need to get those & work from there.
some states it's near impossible.

Good luck in Al. I'm in the Huntsville area and after doing the research came to the conclusion that if the bike does not already have a street title when you go to the tag office you won't be getting a tag. The way i got around it was to browse ebay for a few months until i stumbled on a guy selling a titled frame from Il. I then switched everything from my old frame to the new frame and took it to the tag office. Luckily once you have a title to transfer its cake to get a tag. There was no inspection for my bike. The workers at the offices usually wouldn't know an XR from a CBR so it won't raise any red flags and they'll just do the transfer for you.

My father was also able to do this when he bought a DRZ from Tn. that was already titled. Interestingly then, the office worker decided to check the vin on the bike against the title. He had full non-dot knobbies and a bycicle horn but the lady didn't bat an eye. Just said show me the vin and all was well.

Good luck man.
