Pissed Where did the oil go?

I did my 2nd oil change on my 03 XR which has less than 1000 miles.

Yesterday, drain the used oil, and pour it into 2 - quart bottle and about 1.8 quarts came out. That's good.

Install new filters and pour in fresh oil, 1.9 quart as the manual says. Fired up the engine for about 3 minutes. Check the oil level using dipstick, and nothing. I thought the oil is still everywhere and waited until it settles down. Check this morning, still no reading! The bike was upright and the both wheels are on the ground! I don't smoke or drink alcohol, and there's no spilled oil on the floor!

I'm cautious to add more oil, .

Anyone had this experience?

I've had it happen.

If I remember right I didn't do anything too tricky to get it to prime (I'm asuming air was trapped somewhere.) I think I just started it and drove it a few times a few feet before shutting it down and re-checking. I might have added just a little oil, but when it was ready the oil level just shot right up. Frustrating, I know. Good luck... -Dale

I've been fooled already. After a ride, I decided to check it and I thought I was waaay low. I added until it looked normal. Next time I checked it was way over full. Seems like there are places for it to hide in there.

It's freakin weird..That's a fact.

On my Dr (wet sump design) you just run the engine for a minute, shut it off for a minute and look in the sight glass and go "Yup...there's oil in there."

sight glasses are cool, it makes is so much easier to check the oil before every ride

that's the only thing I miss from my KLR

This is a known issue- the oil doesn't stay in the frame like good oil should, so checking cold doesn't work. The CV on ThumperTalk, which I've found to be true(ish), is that you should ride it around for a bit after it's warm and then check the oil immediately following shutdown. Immediately <>3 minutes later- it means, have the dipstick cap loose and paper towel in your hand when you hit the killswitch.

Keep the bike upright, unscrew the dipstick, remove, wipe, drop back in without screwing it in, then take your reading.

My service manual says that the bike needs 2.3 quarts after engine overhaul.

When I changed the oil, I let it drained overnight. So I guess I drained more oil than the normal oil changed. So this afternoon, I added a little less than a quarter of a quart. Still no reading on the dipstick. Fired up the engine for about 5 minutes and checked the oil level again.

Voila, I have the correct oil level. Weird but true.

The used oil was 1.8 quart and I'm just guessing that's pretty much the bike had. A little low in comparison with the 2.3 quarts.

Thanks you guys.

Joel

Try ThumperTalk.com

Try Thumpertalk.com for some different threads. I too have an '01 XR4 that I just sent the paperwork off today for plates and I also have an '04 KLR650 that was aquired last week. It is my first "non winged" bike since I had a KLT 250 in '84! Believe it or not, I was on vacation this past week wanting to get home to ride and kept thinking of the mods I could do to her!!!! I put plates on her today, Kenda k270's tonight and don't plan on letting her rest all weekend! If you are in the Panhandle of FL, shoot me a PM or email and lets go ride!

Just saw this thread for the first time.

I bought the last '05 XR400R the dealer had in '06. The last of the breed here in the US. I liked the simplicity over the new 450's.

Bike works perfect for me. Here is a pix with my son's new CRF150F.

XR400- pumper carb/XR's only

Ok,
I've emailed XR's only as I would like to order one of their pre jetted mikuni pumper carbs. Most people seem very happy with them.
I'm in Thailand so not easy...however no reply from Xr's...anyone going down to Xr's....I'd love a price including shipping x air to Thailand.
cheers
