You brought up a good point that I haven't seen anyone mention before. How do these things continue to run on their side and/or upside down?!!

If I wreck, I usually have to shut it off (due to fears of insufficient oiling) before it actually stalls out before I can get to a comfortable place to pick it up or drag it back up the mountainside.

Fork Seal Replacement

Hi All, just in the process of replacing the fork seals on my 98 XR400. All going well, fork cap removed, oil drained, spring removed, dust seal removed. Next step, remove the bottom bolt, the one at the bottom of the fork leg. It just seems to spin and shows no sign of coming out from the bottom of the fork leg. Am I missing something obvious or do I have a problem on my hands? Any help/advice greatly received.

You need a special tool..... can be made from a spare piece of suitable pipe. It goes into the slider from the top and holds the inside when you remove the bolt. Take a look, you should be able to see two slots that the tool fits into.

a friend of mine has that tool and one of these days, I am going to go over there with a piece of SCH 40 pvc 1" and make me a copy of that tool..to the OP question, yes, you will need that special tool to reach in from the top down into the fork to put a hold on the slotted washer down there to undo the bolt in the bottom leg, and you will need that tool to put it back together.

I seem to recall just using an impact wrench for taking my shocks apart and making a wedge of sorts with a PVC pipe for assembly. Either way I didn't buy one of those tools and I rebuilt my shocks just fine.

Oh ya. Selling my black 19" CACR hub/wheel for $300. Doesn't include the brake or sprocket, just the spun aluminum hub (much stronger than stock), wheel, heavy duty spokes, and straight rim with a few blemishes but no dents or bends. Only had the wheel a couple years and 1500~ miles so the bearings are still fresh. I spent around $450 on it. Will include the Tubeliss for $50 more and if you buy the tubeliss I'll even leave the MT-21 with 40% tread on there if you'd like. Nice aftermarket wheel for about the same price as stock ones are going for on ebay. Just used a picture on the bike for convenience, that tire only lasted 250 miles so its not on there anymore.
