This is worth noting again...

And today yes indeed Nicolas Boyer finished the 14 days of Dakar on a 1999 XR400 in 87th place overall out of 125 finishers (out of 183 starters)!!
...and to top it all he was one of only 7 finishers in the "Malle Moto" classes, those amazing riders who arrive each night exhausted and only greeted by their trunk full of gear and parts. No spare engines! Ha! Not even a mechanic to help, perhaps just the camaraderie of other Malle Moto riders when you are in a bind, I don't know how they do it. These are the true legends of Dakar, simply amazing.

Our hat's off to you Nicolas - the King of all XR400 riders in the world, IMHO!

I thought it would be fun -- if you care to join me... to post a picture of your XR4 on his Dakar Facebook page! I did... Let's see how many we can get!

Ok one more item.. Here is the English translation of his 2013 Dakar Rider page:

"My bike only costs 3500 euros! '

This time comeback for Nicolas Boyer. He loves the bike in all its forms, and practice since the age of seven years on the tracks cross or enduro, the most prestigious circuits as the Bol d'Or, and of course on the dunes of Dakar, he won in 2001, finishing 35th on the same shores of Lac Rose. Since the Ardèche also tasted the boat races, but returned after a 12 year absence on the gold standard, the Dakar. To spice up the game, Nicolas is not only committed without assistance, but especially straddles an old Honda XR 400 from 1999, a model that will only drive the rally. With one of the smallest budgets of the plateau, the ghost also wants to show that the Dakar can be considered modestly.

"The same year, I had the Dakar and the Bol d'Or, which is not bad for a biker. Since then I've done other things, but every time I meet someone, he asks me when I'm leaving on the Dakar. And this year, I got the call from South America. I have an old bike, but it is a simple and reliable mechanics. There is a sentimental side to jump with a motorcycle in 1999, but it also worked many times. When others leave with a machine 35 000 euros, mine only costs 3500 euros! I have a total budget of 25,000 euros, I do not see how we can do less. I'm trunk-bikes because I think that is where are the true values of Dakar. Moreover, if the objective is simply to reach the end, I'm also tempted by the victory in this category. "

Question - cold bike clacking/clicking noise

This weekend rode Anza Borrego. One morning it was cold. I have mostly 15-40 oil in it, heard at about 32 deg a slight, intermittent clicking on the right side. I shut it down and rode the xr600 down the Pinyon trail instead. Later, started the xr400 and noise gone. Rode fine. Is there some type of oil pressure regulating unit clicking as globs of oil pass to the oil cooler/resevoir? Maybe going bad?

thanks,

cb

I am searching for a Corbin or similar type seat for my 96 XR250R. If anyone has anything laying around please let me know. Of course, anything XR400 or 250R 96' and up will work. We are getting ready to do the next leg of our TAT trip and my stock seat is just too broken down. Thanks!

Hate to butt in, but if anyone has something he doesn't want let me know. I'll be doing TAT and I need a more comfortable seat for the trip this summer.

It ain't no Corbin but here's a cheap WallyWorld option...

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Stearns-Bl...Cover/10727537

Used it on the LA-Barstow to Vegas, the Florence Coke Oven ride and the East Tex 450 'DirtyButt'(the whole thing in one day) and was able to walk away from each without a limp. I can also switch it from bike to bike. You can kinda see it installed in this pic..

I have a buddy that uses the WallyWorld pad on his 450EXC and also a WR250, says he wouldn't be without it.
Also have 2 buddies that have Seat Concepts, I've ridden their bikes and while the pad is an improvement, my choice would be the Seat Concepts.

That seat concepts is looking like a good option at this point. I only need to find a base to use since I want to be able to swap out with the stock seat as well. I had the Wally pad but decided to try and wash it and it got chewed up really bad.

rear shock

Has anyone rebuilt an xr 400 rear shock or purchased an aftermarket shock they would recommend? I have seen one on ebay, a Hagen from England, has anyone heard of these,

I was going to rebuild mine but there is some wear in the bore and it may not last. (Rebuilt it two years ago and has failed already
