Duke,

I had the 3.8 Clarke and got in the range of 50-58mpg unless really hammering. That tank never seemed to get close to reserve....

You'll definitely want a stator upgrade if you add anything - XR's Only as mentioned - and look at Ricky Stators. With XR's Only you'll have to send yours in for a re-wire....Ricky Stator sells them outright.

I'm putting a Ricky on the XR600 - never took the XR400 to that level, always knew it was an interim bike and wouldn't be around that long.

I've never owned an XR400 but I've put a lot of miles on them some racing, some trail riding. Myself and some friends ran this '96 XR400 with a Baja Designs kit on it in the 1996 6 Hours of Glen Helen.


That's my friend leaving our pits from a gas stop/rider change.

We did the same thing the next year on a '97 XR400.

Check out the old skool Hi Points.


For me, that's BIG AIR!!


The bike was bone stock. Funny that we got the same number two years in a row. Those team endurance races are a lot of fun.

My XR400R
bought it new in September 2006 and have riden 15000 miles in 12 month's and I'm still on the same C+S and break pads

I have changed the oil and filter every 1000 mile'a and the bike as not missed a beat.
The xr400 as to be a contender for one on the best all round Thumpers of all time.

No Bling only a 22 lt tank,sump guard and a set of bar risers
standerd exhaust,and carb.But the snorkel from the air box has been removed.

Cry I miss my XR...

Here's some pics from my 01 XR400-still miss it a bunch
Custom made Franken-rack with ghetto ammo box for storage-yea for beginner's fab skills!
Barkbusters, UFO headlight, upgraded stator, Applied Racing top triple clamp, decomp lever removed (if you don't know how to start that thing flooded or not, you're a wuss)
Miss the fun factor around town and on the trails for sure

stock stator is supposed to be 75W

tailight is about 12W draw, brake 22ish if you've got that setup going

maybe enough for a 55W headlight but not the 100W one

You could go to LED taillight to ease current draw if you decide to dualsport it. The oem headlight is 35w, you could get an Acerbis with 2x 35w, a pencil and a wide beam. (like the Acerbis DHH sitting on my shelf)
By then you've almost spent 2/3 of what a stator would cost.

I'm too lazy to see if anyone put this up before - good reference.

Check here for one you can run on the stock AC system. Second from bottom. Don't know if it is dual intensity for a brake light and tail light. I'll call Forest on Monday and ask.

I'm leaning towards not doing a DC conversion and not upgrading the stator. Just a 55W headlight in a glass lense from BD and an 1157 tail / brakelight. My headlight will go dim when I'm on the brakes.

I can help you with yours if you want Duke. I've got mad lectrical skills and cool tools and loads of male and female bullet connectors and silcone boots like the OEM Honda ones and a fancy double crimper etc...

That would be great, Scot. I hate 'lectrical stuff. I couldn't find the glass lens light from BD. Are you talking about the round lights or....? What about those 1157 replacement LED bulbs... do you know if they draw less?

BD doesn't make it easy to find. It's under the "bike specific products" here

The benefit of the glass one is that it won't melt like the plastic stock lens will if you put a higher wattage bulb in it. Then down the road when you get your upgraded stator you can change the 55W out for a 100W.

The 1157 doesn't draw less it just adds the brake light filament and is a readily available bulb.

My '96 had an 1157 bulb in it from stock. When I put on the brake light switch, I just had to run the 2nd wire to the oem socket and feed it into a hole already there waiting for a wire (under the other contact of an 1157), put a dab of solder on the end....in business. My headlight dimmed, but it was quick and easy.
Cost me about $35 to make mine legal. (except the DOT Kenda Trakmaster II's which came a little later)
