While I haven't perused this entire thread, pix like this intrigue me. I've seen several done at night apparently with a long exposure with "light-painting" of the bike in the foreground. Can anyone comment on how this type of picture is actually made ? Anyone have a link or detailed explanation of the technique ?

Easy...exposé for the background and then flash the subject with a hand hold flash. Flash a bit high so you don't flash the ground like the one here. Background exposure around 10-30 seconds depending on the available light. Before then end of the exposure, pop the flash on your foreground subject.

We will expect examples shortly.

That one I shot with my Sony H2.

Full-[M]anual mode, opened everything all the way up (30" f2.8), ISO on manual at 80 to keep the image clean.

Camera was set up on a gorillapod on top of a sign in the parking lot. Used the 10-sec self-timer with SteadyShot off (as it should be anytime you're shooting on a tripod).

Light source is my flashlight (Fenix LD20) balanced on a rock to the right, lowest power setting.

Hit the shutter, gave it 8-10 secs exposure with the flashlight on, then shut the light off and let the camera finish out the 30sec.

+1 for "aim high" - I wanted to keep the shithouse out of the light so the center point of the beam was near the engine head, just below the seat (You can kinda tell where it's centered if you look at the bike's shadow).

Also, don't expect it to come out perfect the first time. I took a dozen shots (30 secs each, plus another minute or so for the camera to "process" the image...) before I got that one that came out the way I wanted it to, mainly messing with the flashlight between shots. Gotta have patience and not be afraid to fill the memory card.

Here's one I shot this evening, same basic technique. Just enough light to highlight the bike without blowing everything out. Held the light (again, low power) next to my head, then used my other hand to shadow the light from the ground to avoid highlighting the rocks. Did it once on the left, and again on the right in the same exposure. 13" f6.3, ISO 200.

The "light painting" thing is done with a long-exposure shot too. Use the self-timer or a wireless remote to give you some time to get into the frame... then just "draw" what you want. The Fenix light kinda sucks for that, the way teh switch works is you click it <2secs to change the power level... my old Maglite worked a lot better for "light painting".

Here's a couple shots I took this past spring.

My KLR 650 at Beaver Pond in the Pine Barrens.

Buddies CB350 project and his pop's Impala.

Both shots taken with a Bronica ETRSi.
