6,000 miles on a Pirelli MT21!?

Finally getting around to changing my tire. Went back and checked my records... I got an ADDITIONAL 3,000 miles on the BACK Pirelli MT21 on my LC4. It came with the bike when I bought it and I figured it was about half used, and in better shape than the terrorflex the bike had on it, so I put it back on. Granted, its not much more than a banana peel right now, but it worked great in the snow with the chain! Hope the new one goes 6k more! Sorry for the sucky camera-phone pics...

Congrats! I only manage to get 3500'ish out mine on the DRZ, but I ride it like it's a street tire on the tarmac.

DR-Z have real power..

Have you all horses in home your KTM..??

joke, joke...

Very good age for MT21 if remember your bike is quite heavy KTM LC4, usually in Finland about 3000-5000km is maximum for the MT21 and no matter with what bike...asphalt/tarmac is poison for that.

depends

Depends on what you are using the tire for, and to what standard you look to for replacement.

When I had MT-21s on a DRZ, I would change the rear out at 1,000 to 1,500miles, because I wanted good soft terrain performance. IMHO a new MT-21 rear resembles a typical full off-road knobby with about 500 miles out of it already. And lots of folks would replace their off-road tire at that point. Some of the Hare Scramble guys change their tire very week.

If you are going to keep it on as long as it has legal tread for the road, then you have a lot more depth that you're willing to wear down.

Looks like the center knob wear finally caught up with the middle wear. I usually toss mine once the middle knobs wear down....

thats a front tire. Mine is the rear. My front is wearing the same. Got around 1500-2000 miles on my front and its starting to look like that. Figure its got another 1000 left in it, maybe more if I flip it around.

For the record, I like to feel acceleration and I ride a lot of pavement, did a fair bit of 2-up and loaded camping trips, and that rear tire held up really good!

I tried flipping the front Karoo(metzler) around on the ft of my DR and it was borderline unrideable wandering all over the road. Once the knobs are worn crooked I think they are toast. The Lc4 I had seemed to destroy tires in about 1000 miles due to some sliding and wheelie problems that seemed to crop up every time I rode the Damn thing

Heres some better pics of the tire. Double checked last night, I put 3100 miles on the tire and it was at least half used up when I put it on. These were not easy miles either!

Put it in the Flea Market section. Somebody's KLR could still get a couple thousand miles out of it.

I have no idea how you do it, my last MT21 looked like that in ~1500 miles. My new one has noticeable wear in 150 miles

Dorkpunch,
I used MT 21's in Mongolia and Russia, about equal on/off road use. I got the same great results you did but I did pump up for the black roads and let the air out for the loose stuff.

I love 'em.
been around a long time and get overlooked too often... great tires.
I had a pair on my son's "learner" old RT180, and never did wear them out..... rode the thing for several years and sold it. had 'em on my XR650R streetized and they were just sheer magic on that bike... terrific on backroads, terrific in the mountains, iffy in mud but you just keep a'grindin'.

Dorkpunch, why don't you save that tire for me and I'll put it on my KLR. I could use a new tire! Mine wore out with only 2800 miles on the bike. Not quite as bad as the Venture Royale was, but its getting there...
