Street legal only for now, but I just ran across a 125 comparison in the July 1976 issue of Cycle. With their little 1.5 gallon tanks full....

Yamaha YZ125X, 208 lbs
Honda CR125M, 205 lbs
Suzuki RM125A, 197 lbs

I'm with 2whlrcr on wondering if we're going in the right direction. But I remember in the early days of long travel people were breaking frames and swingarms due to the additional leverage. I think in the end we accepted a 15-20 weight penalty in exchange for doing triples. We were probably all safer when the big jumps had downhill landings.

Thank you sir. I'm adding it to the list. Also found the first KTM Adventure.

I just weighed my bikes. My '86 TT350 weighed in at 267 lbs with about .5 gallons fuel in the tank, that would bring it to right at 280 with a full tank. The bike is fully street legal, battery and all. My '80 TT500 is 297 lbs with about 1 gallon in the tank, also fully street legal.

I reckon my bike is pretty light for it's displacement and power.

It's just gravity, right?

I'm not sure if it is still done but most manufacturers used to take the term "dry weight" in a very literal sense. They always excluded the battery! That's right, that 10-20 pound box of lead most of us have. Since it had "wet" stuff in it they would pull the battery, together with oil, gas and radiator fluid to arrive at a "dry" weight. (oh yes throw out the tool kit as well) They probably even excluded brake fluid. The "ready to ride" weight is what matters. As to gas I say 2.5 gallons for everyone. Good enough for 100 miles or so for most bikes, costs about $10, and I can remember 15 pounds. Now if you want a real debate maybe some of the aero folks can run the numbers on center of gravity, effort, etc. for our trusty steeds. I'm sure we've all ridden a light bike that felt heavy and a heavy bike that rode light. Measuring the gravitational attraction to the center of the earth (i.e. weight) is just one measure. Thanks, Rich
p.s. My KLR weighs nothing while riding upright, about 400 lbs in the truck and weighed 2 tons when it fell off the loading ramp.

Eldon Carl uses 3 gallons to weigh the bikes. Eldon Carl usally states his source for weights, and there is some diffrence from bike to bike.

The KLR weight reduction thread here has good info on the stock KLR weight. http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=172734

The F650 weight from Carl is the advertised BMW # (426) is pretty accurate, and is with full fuel for non US bikes (4 gallons or 17 liters).

I have a theory that the previous model KLR 650 (up to '07) was actually the number used on the non E-start KLR 600, that big K never updated when they changed the model, and you weights seem to bear that out.

Interesting thread -- 19 pages on putting the KLR650 on a diet!

My most troubling issue on the 2008 KLR650 is that Cycle World reported the weight at 442 and Motorcyclist at 432. I don't have that kind of discrepancy on any other bike for the same year and model. All my other weights are within a pound or two of each other.

Just found this 2007 Rider magazine XRL DR KLR comparison thanks to a link from another ADVrider. http://www.ridermagazine.com/output.cfm?id=1214911

Here's the money line as it pertains to this thread: "According to the stone simple but precise Rider scale, the wet weights of the Honda and Suzuki are 344 and 368 respectively, while the KLR rides in at 411 pounds."

I have these bikes in the list at 347, 367, and 398-401. The old-style KLR must have gained some weight since 1992.

Otherwise it isn't much of a test. The Suzuki got the best mileage and had the least vibration, the Kawasaki had the best seat and the worst brakes, and the Honda had the best suspension and the tallest seat.

Showroom, unfarkled pre-'08 KLR650's weigh pretty much exactly 410 lbs., wet.

Per a 6 bike sampling weighed by yours truly on certified scales, and supported by similar weights offered by members of this forum, also on certified public scales.
