Reefton 3rd-6th Oct

Wednesday - the ride home

All good things must come to an end so we packed up and Struan loaded the DT onto his trailer and headed out to the West coast to do some work while and led me up the hills above Reefton for a quick look around. Awesome stuff

Great views over Reefton

And a neat shortcut to get to Soldiers Rd (Big River) from Reefton

From there is was back through Reefton and off towards Springs Junction

From Springs Junction it was back over the Maruia Saddle and down the best fast gravel road in the country - Matakitaki Rd for a coffee in Murchison. Then
off via Mangles Valley to the stunning Breaburn Track

And its many fords

A quick stop at the lake

where my camera ran out of memory...

Then off up the very lumpy climb up the Porika where Andy's much abused pannier rack broke off (he thinks they are crash bars...)

We spent quite a bit of time with some rope and cable ties getting it back together

A great ride down and out through Howard Valley Rd

From there it was basically a 2 hour transport down the the monotonous Waiau Valley to Blenheim then into Picton for a quick feed of fish and chips before hoping onto the 6pm ferry back home

There is so much to explore in this area - can't wait to get back again - maybe March/April next year?

Andy made a great video of the ride

Roll on next time :)

Good stuff :)

Wish I could have gone through the Braeburn but as it was my feet and legs were getting a tad cold on the way home.

Isn't that the unstallable, Rekluse equipped, big bore KLR being stalled up Waitahu River Road?

I'm so surprised that you got wet feet ....

the rekluse bit makes it unstallable but the slightly less than perfect jetting means a sharp off then on the throttle at low revs can cause a bog/die

WR450 does the same thing

I'm too lazy to try and fix it.

I was up that way 2 weeks ago looking at a car and had 45 minutes to spare so went for a look up Maungakotukutukutukutukutukutuku road, just went as far as the first river crossing though, It looks interesting.

If I'm on the WR it's really hard not to fang it and as a result at the end of the day I am totally shattered.

If I'm on the KLR its all very relaxed - apart form when it goes shitfaced) - sight seeing in the bush - only mildly shattered at the end of a day

it goes about 1km more then dead ends unless you are happy to try one of the 4 hill climbs that come off it. I hope to get the KLR to the top of the easiest. I wouldnt have the balls to take a 950 up any of them

happy to come and video you if you want to give it a try

I would be impressed too

all we did was ride around the long way (Paraparaumum-Karapoti-Rock Garden) to the top

its a great ride

I couldn't resist the poser shot

I think with a serious set of knobbies and some low gearing it would be doable but
there are a couple of bits where if it went wrong it would go totally shitfaced and probably involve a westpac helicopter.....
