I wouldnt have wanted to take Gus on these tracks even if I had nice cool mx gear on - that would have crossed the line between fun and plain hard work. Quote:
Yep you didn't miss a thing ![]() we'll run a special one just for you and Wade when you finally get your arses into gear and get down here for a weekend If youve only got a long weekend bring the little bikes and stay around Wellywood. If you've got 4-5 day's up here bring the big bikes. We'll tailor a ride to suit what you turn up with (there never been an airhead at the bottom of the Devils Staircase...yet)

Friday Ride
My son Glen suggested that we should try trials tires on the rear of our trail bikes so I grabbed the only one in stock (he can wait) and had it put on my wr450.
We took Friday off to see what difference it would make. It may look skinny and useless but it sure works. makes the bike seem much more stable and settled over tree roots and loose rocks. The biggest problem for me on steep hill climbs has always been loss of traction. Now its looping (I did it twice on Friday and will need to replace my rear guard soon. A short vid from a rocky climb (steeper than it looks) - the bike just tractored up untill I cocked things up and binned. A great improvement Glen is now really keen to try one

I think a T63 is a better choice for road/trail use. I'm lucky to have two rear wheels and I'll keep a knobby on one for more open rides and the trials tire for the more challenging stuff.

More vids from Fridays Ride
Some of the riding was a bit tight and I bashed a few trees fairly hard so I spent part of the afternoon cutting 30mm from my handlebars.
Glen spent this afternoon exploring some really nasty tracks on foot so looks like a pretty serious effort will be required next weekend (provided the trials tire we orderd today for Glens bike turns up in time)

What tyres are you running?
The road legal MT43 ($150) on the back of the TT goes quite well on the road at 25psi. At 10psi or less in the gnarly stuff, it's almost cheating, you almost feel guilty running it. Almost. They're definitely not a "lean the bike over and gas it" type tyre but for the stuff you're doing there, almost perfect. Almost as good as a Shinko 705... |

picked up the bits to put one on Glens bike today so we'd better have some good weather this weekend... and you are right - it is almost like cheating - but I can live with that :)

No problem. Maybe we'll catch up mid-February when Clint and I are passing through on our way to the South Island.
