i don't know what the guy did to fit those husky forks. i meant that if he fit them on a versys that they would also work on the 650R. the versys and 650r use the same frame, stem, races, bearings, etc.

Okay, gotcha. I guess I'll just look into it more down the road when I can either afford two projects, or finish the one I have...

you might want to take measurements on a DR vs. XRR. I had both simultaneously [sold the converted XRR and kept two drs] and it looks to me like the DR may have a little more room there for possible conversion to parallel twin. Or give me the dimensions necessary and I'll take some metrics in the garage.
Is the 650 kawa really larger than the 500?

i'm removing the 650R suspension and replacing it with the versys suspension. the versys has the bigger shock, beefier USD forks, and stronger trees. this suspension works for what i want to do with the bike.

i have a guy that's bugging me to buy the 650r forks, and if i sell them that would put the starting point under $1500, but i might keep them. haven't decided yet.

After riding the bike for awhile (and having a blast) I have figured out some things that are lacking. Here's my list of things I want to improve.....

1) Seat to peg distance. Get the pegs further forward for stand up riding.
2) Better suspension front and rear.
3) Engine protection.
4) I have Stormcase's, gotta get them on there.

As soon as the riding season is trully over I'm going to bring the bike in, strip it down and take a good long look at it. I was thinking of putting the engine in a different frame but looking at it more it's hard to believe I could save much weight. The Ninja frame is steel and maybe heavy, but it's minimal because it uses the engine as a stressed member. I've studied some bikes lately that use the engine as a stressed member (like the Ninja) and noticed that they use the bottom of the engine for mounting things (such as skid plates). I think I'm going to machine a new oil pan with bosses for mounting a plate. Doing this will also eliminate the low/delicate oil drain plug.
Not sure yet if I will move the exhaust. The reasons that Kawasaki put the exhaust down undernieth are valid ones. Low CofG. It's a very solid muffler that seems like it could take quite a beating. If it does get damaged they are a dime a dozen online. It's nice and quiet as well. The price to pay for sturdy and quiet however is that it weighs about 13 lbs (if I remember correctly).

Hey JD;

After checking out some of your posts it's clear you spend alot of time off the beaten path. What are your thoughts on spokes vs. cast wheels? For me, tubeless plugable tires are a huge plus.

i was on gravel roads, although some were in very rough shape, and not single track or terrain of that kind.

i've had about 100 people tell me that i'm going to break those cast wheels, but for where i'm riding i just don't see it. bend an edge, yes, but that goes with the use. i see more dinged up spoke wheels.

the other aspect is the muddy sloppy road conditions up north or other places. many times the bike and everything else is covered with a layer of mud. plugging a tubeless in those conditions is one thing, but patching a tube is a whole different deal.

i thought about setting up some spoke wheels for the ER6 build, but i didn't think i could do it and stay within my budget. then there were all those photos of muddy roads....

so to answer the question, i'm staying cast. it works best for where that bike is going.

juames,

I agree! More info needed, and yes I would probably buy one if Kawa, or Yama, or honda would put one out. This is the direction the Transalp should have gone.
