There's a good chance that I'll be at Mossy Head with a couple of guys practicing for the enduro next weekend at Perry Mountain. If you guys need a break, come on by and say what's up.

Encounter at Autozone

Thought I would share a little story for all the ADV'ers out there.

I was at autozone today picking up some items. While at the cash register the guy noticed my range pass in my wallet and said, "your active duty why do you need a range pass?" ( I was in uniform)

I said, "everyone needs a range pass that wishes to use the reservation, regardless if your military or not."

He said, "Oh do you hunt, because i got the full pass for hunting/fishing."

I said, "No, I mostly use it for passing through, or riding my enduro out there."

Well the tone of his voice suddenly changed, and I knew something not good was about to come out.

He said "Well I was bow hunting the other day in my tree stand and a couple of dirt bikers came riding by, was that you?"
I said, 'No, it was not"

Now here is the interesting stuff. He says, "Well i thought about slinging an arrow at those dirt bikers that rode by my stand, for they just pissed me off. "

I said, "thats probably not a good idea."

He then gets a bit aggravated and says, "Well I was in an Archery only area and those dirt bikes are not allowed in there."

I then said, " I dont believe that is the case"

I am doing my best to be polite and professional as I can be and not inflame the situation. Understand he is an Autozone employee.

He says "Well if you look at the map it says Archery only in certain areas."

I paused for sec and said "That is not entirely correct, an Archery only area means that you can hunt in that area using a bow and arrow, not a gun. Everyone else with a pass still has full access to that area, its not restricted to just certain people doing certain activities. "

He took a step back realizing he was talking out of his ass and his emotions where getting the best of him..

He said " Well that just sucks, i had to tear down my stand and move it, bla bla bla."

I then said in closing as he is checking me out, "well thats what happens when your hunting in area where the public has full access with a pass, everyone has a right to be out there legaly"

He didnt like that and got quiet and walked off, not even saying have a good day. I love it.

FYI his name is Rick and he works at Autozone in Niceville. hehehe

No harm no foul, but it just shows you some of the mentality of these hunters. They think the range is theirs and nobody elses. Just some food for thought.

BTW anyone riding locally this weekend?

no kidding. I've been driving a Jackson Guard Fire Management fire engine in full fire gear, and hunters had purposely blocked the road with their trucks and were standing in the road waiting for me, when I parked the engine, got out and asked these gentlemen if they could kindly let me through, the head honcho informed me that his name was "mullethead" and that I should pass word to my boss that he was "gonna have his job for burning up MY huntin areas."

I patiently began to explain our philosophy on prescribed burning, and he interrupted me, pointing at a nearby longleaf about 20' tall, and proceeded to inform me that it takes hundreds of years for em to get that big, and that we're destroying the forest...

at that point I informed him that i'll have to call range patrol to get him to move his trucks, and one of his buddies chickened out and moved his truck for him.

what's sad though, is these fellers vote.

I'd like to see Mullethead's side of it but... I can't manage to stick my head that far up my ass.

It's never ceased to amaze me that hunters think we "ruin" their hunting. The deer see & hear us all year long and basically pay us no importance.....then when the hunters are trying to kill em, they say we're scaring the deer

Nothing to report

Phil and I did some serious splorin today. Conclusion: we are already riding the best trails, although the long Trot loop has some new and really good stuff... but there is 8 miles of 285 that you will have to endure...

Bow hunters were out in force.... nasty looks but no problems...found a pond today we did not know existed. Walton Pond - can you imagine!

Anyway great weather today and a great ride with my son.

BTW - dont come down to hard on Bubba Hunter... some of my very best friends know people who think they may be related to people who hunt...
