Mining for things that are acidic requires going below the water table, then having to pump the mines to keep them from flooding. Exposing all that aluminum and then no longer pumping the water out means that the mine gets flooded and the resulting exposed aluminum caused some pretty nasty acid mine drainage. The acid mine drainage kills most of the useful aquatic life downstream including many species of fish and screws up the PH of the water everywhere downstream.

They are dosing it with Lime (calcium oxide) which will neutralize the PH of the water to a more livable condition for fish and remove the dissolved aluminum.

Fish life that all died off is starting to return now that the water is getting back to normal.

I had a feeling someone else would be after it today. That's why I took my laptop with me, so I could post a nice picture while I was having lunch instead of waiting until I got home.

Well at least those are my nicknames for the area.



Your newest tag resides on a 3 digit state route that is only approximately 8 miles long and runs approximately Northwest/Southeast, though the state route signs are labeled north and south. You can pick it up just south of Bremen. There are lots of fun curves on the road, but beware of probable copious amounts of horse shit.

You will see many signs like the one in the picture along this route, on both sides of the road. Each one has one of the 10 commandments on it. The signs are double sided, and do not have the same commandment on each side. The trick is you'll have to be facing the right direction to find the sign in the picture, and to prove that you are you should take a wider angle shot that shows the road in the background with the barn and curve up ahead.

One last hint: My motorcycle is facing the wrong direction for the side of the road I'm on, which would mean that when you are going the proper direction the sign will be on your left.

Have at it. If you need any additional hints I'll provide them, but I'd bet you folks are good enough to figure this one out.

He's my buddy. His sister isn't taking to the sidecar as well just yet, but I'm not giving up. She'll ride in the sidecar quite happily on the lap of my girlfriend, but doesn't like riding alone. It takes a lot of training to get them over the fear of all of the noises from the machine and traffic. Their instinct of course is to run, which is the reason why there is a tether bolted to the bottom of the sidecar.
