I tried vice grips with no luck. Was to hard to compress. Anyway, It's on and seems ok. I'll keep an eye on it for a while. BTW: When I replaced the original chain a few years ago, it had to be cut apart. "No master link" I was standing there when the shop guy did the install. He used a dremel grinder to cut original chain off. Thanks everyone for your input. Great forum for info. |

good to know they are the same, they sure look the same to me. I would not worry too much about the scar, now that you have changed heads, just make sure the new head's valves are in good order and properly shimmed. Seeing how your engine is already apart i would consider puting a new piston and rings in it. Not too much work (at this point) but worth the trouble and money considering you already have the head off. Otherwise just clean it and re assemble just my thoughts

Well, your head failed because a valve obviously hit that piston and you are fitting a new head.
It's probably fine - but a piston kit is not expensive and, while the head is off, it is easier to fit one now rather than have to strip the engine down again. It's a wise precaution to at least have somebody pull the piston and make sure it and the cylinder have no damage. Saves you doing the work two times.

Hi everyone, first post here!
@SaDow "And another question for u this is my piston .... there is a small hit just a scar... will i have problems like oil burning or something? or i am good to go.?" The AX1 NX250 is a Nikasil coated bore so if you are planning on replacing the piston it will be a good idea to use a factory made replacement only if your nikasil sleeve coating is in a good condition. Note that cylinders from several Japanese manufacturers have thinner coatings, sometimes as thin as 0.05 mm (0.002"), making the honing procedure a very risky business. If your bike's coating is in a bad condition and you leave the bore scored then you will get blow by, low compression, burnt piston/bore as the combustion gases rush by. It wont last for long. Personally I'd go for a cylinder/piston replacement if so. If everything is in good condition I'd keep using the original one. *(Sorry for the long answer) |

Harbor Freight High Position Motorcycle Lift
Does any one have/use one of these? http://www.harborfreight.com/automotive-motorcycle/lifts-stands/high-position-motorcycle-lift-99887.html
Will it lift a Honda GL1800? How stable is it if removing wheels? Does it mate to bottom of an 1800? |

noise
Hi,
help is needed. Honda ax-1 has a strange noise or whistle hearing from engine. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dUbNSkNzrg odometr >62000km (I have ridden 46000км, there was no speedometer drive(cable) when bike has come from Japan). No one had opened the engine covers since 1989. Local mechanic has told it is the cam chain noise. I have replaced cam chain (the old and the new chain have the same length) http://ax1.f.qip.ru/?1-2-0-00000042-...1-0-1305389284 ![]() adjusted valve clearance (was 0.30 0.25 0.25 0.25mm become 0.23 0.21 0.18 0.23 spec 0.23+-0.03) http://ax1.f.qip.ru/?1-2-0-00000006-...1-0-1305531694 ![]() checked cylinder compression: 14 bar, 15 bar with oil. (spec 16). http://ax1.f.qip.ru/?1-2-0-00000169-000-0-0-1305340373 ![]() Noise remained the same. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0-W_XYnMk8 where is it coming from? |

It sounds to me like the compression test is the telling one. adding oil got you one more bar, so you have lower end blow by. Still low compression means top end problems.
I think you need new rings (maybe a new piston and cylinder) and a proper 3 angle valve job. My best guess, but the whistle is an over-pressurized crankcase and a mostly full breather tube.

May be so.
Oil consumption is less than 100ml on 1000km. Compression test was not accurate: engine was warmed up for only 2 min, the tester is intended for the car and has a dead(not used) volume in a hose. A good mechanic said "no crime sound, ride". So i will wait until next oil change. Valve clearance depends on cam chain tensioner, I had measured +0.02-0.03mm when removed it. I have cleaned crankcase breather tube earlier. What "an over-pressurized crankcase" means? |

The scar is minor, no problemen.
But did you come across a overbore piston when you were surching for à new one. Or have you found à substitute model from for instance wiseco? |

By "Over-pressurized crankcase" I mean that blow-by past the rings can pressurize the crankcase if the breather tube is clogged.

I have removed a plastic separator and a tube from the engine. The same sound even if I close by the finger a bore in the engine.
Separator is clean. There is an exhaust from the crankcase, depends on revs. No smoke. Smells like oil. I have changed oil 4000km before. Level has droped from max to min mark. I dont see a problem in it. Gasoline in oil (if any) quickly evaporates after warming up. I think in next 20-30 tkm a standart parts will be needed: RING SET PISTON 131A2-KW3-621 GASKET, CYLINDER HEAD 12251-KW3-003 The best way to increase a combustion chamber: XR650R or WR450. And the best way of repair of the old faulty engine - replacement in gathering. |
